Opinions on O.F.Mossberg & Sons model #185D-B for starter gun...

For my son (yeah, sure. That's what I tell myself)
Any safety or reliability objections? any others?
Just looking for a shooter: something I can shave the stock down on (and maybe the barrel, now that I am thinking about my post on The Smithy) to make sized for a Future TFLer.
I'll welcome opinions.

They're safe, reliable and rugged. The 9 point rack over the mantel was obtained from the original owner via a Mossie B/A.

Downside, slow on repeat shots.
