Reloading a .270 Ruger.

Hi all.

I'm completely new to reloading and my dad has just bought a new Ruger M77, Mk2 in .270. We've got all the relaoding gear and was wondering were to start??? In terms of what powder to try, bullets and weights (a 130 grain is plenty big enough for our puposes (shooting fallow deer)). The rifle has a reasonably short barrel so I thought I would start with a medium burning powder.

I would start with at least 2 reloading manuals. Read them each cover to cover....twice. They will answer most, if not all, of your reloading questions. If you still have questions, come on back here and try using the seach function at the top of the page...because chances are the question you wished to ask has been asked before and you will have plenty of info at your fingertips. As far as loads for your rifle, each rifle is different. YOU have got to figure out what load your rifle likes. It is a lot of trial and error. Good luck and be safe!

Mitchell you had me going there for a min. I thought Ruger brought out a new round. You are talking about a 270 Winchester in a Ruger M77?

130 grain bullets are fine for that caliber and I would suggest H4895 for the powder. It's kind of like the Swiss Army knife of gun powder for rifles.

No, you have a Remington chambered in .243 Winchester...

Welcome to the asylum, Mitchell. Enjoy. I'm guessing Hodgdon powders are readily available around there. No kidding about the manuals, there's no substitute for them. Great info in there.

With the 270 and a medium barrel I like to use a very constant powder.
Here in Arizona where it gets to 115 in the shade and 180 in the sun, I have had great results with IMR4064. Start with a load that is listed in your reloading Manuel and then work up from there. IMR4064 in very good heat and cold. Watch for pressure signs and have fun. That’s what it is all about.

H4831 with either 130 or 150 grn Nosler or Hornady SP bullets, begin with starting loads and quit when your satisfied with your groups! Usually powders that produce the highest velocities often produces the smallest groups. FWIW Nosler handbook #4 does not list either 4895 or 4064 powder for this round for either the 130 or 150 gr bullet. William

You'd be better off watching reloading videos on Youtube - reloading manuals are a waste of money nowadays, IMO.

Buy a book or two. Lyman 49th has been great.

I use R22(58gr) for 130gr bullets for 270 Win. Hornady Interlock, Hornady Interlock SST, Nosler Ballistic Tip have all shot well with this powder.
