Based on the info you posted, it's hard to say what model it is.

If it looks like a slightly scaled-down 1911, it is a B-series pistol. The Model B, BS, and B Super look like a Government Model; the BM, BKM, and BKS look like a Commander. The model designation is usually- albeit not always!- stamped on the butt. It may be a small letter above the serial number.

If it's a smallish single-action pistol that looks kinda like a cross between a CZ 75 and a SIG P229, it's probably a Model 43 Firestar (single-stack) or Model 243 Firestar Plus (double-stack).

Mags for these Star pistols are made by Triple K, but I've been warned that production is intermittent, so availability can be spotty. Also, if the pistol is full-size B series, there are two types of mags depending on whether or not the pistol has a notch in the butt at the front of the mag well.

Star also made a series of large DA/SA double-stack pistols- the Models 28, 30, and 31- that look roughly like squared-off CZ 75's, but most of these are marked on the frame rather than the slide, so I'm guessing it's not one of these.

Bingo! I recalled this morning before I stepped out. It said BM on the bottom of where the mainspring housing would be.

So it's a BM.

Thanks for that knowledge man. I didn't know what the heck that even stood for.

I'm curious.. Haven't had a cheapy gun in ages.

Know where I can find a magazine or two for it? Maybe it's a gem. Or something I can fix up and give to my pops.

Due to high sales figures, resale value and collector interest is not very high, but these pistols have a good reputation as "cheapie" carry guns. FWIW along with Llamas, these were generally the least expensive compact 9mm pistols available on the American market from the late 60s through the early 80s, but the Stars seem to have a better reputation for withstanding extended use.

That's a "Starvel" (electroless nickel plated) BM. I wouldn't say it's a clunker. They are as fine a gun as any.

I Got mine from Aim Surplus several years ago. Solid, accurate, 1911 style.

Have a model B that I really like. Best price on mags for star seem to be at Robertsons but finding them in their on line store is a pita. You do need to get BM, BKM BKS specific mags. $40 when you can find them but you can always go for the gunbroker rape factor and get one for $70 almost any time.

I'm still waiting on this magazine. I hope this thing shoots like I'm hearing it does. I usually don't have to try to shoot 9mm well. Such a darn accurate round.

If its really impressive on the range. I'll get it stripped and refinished in NP3+ and call it a day.

A BKS Starlite was my first CCW piece (yes, it was way before there was such a thing as a CCW License). It was super light, very accurate and totally reliable. I bead blasted the easily marked aluminum frame and trimmed down one of the early Pachmayr grip sets to fit it.

It was sort of the Keltec PF9 of it's day except in the Browning design.

Don't dry fire the Star. You can break the firing pin.
NP3 is simply electroless nickel with a little Teflon added. Your gun is already electroless nickel plated.

It needs a refinishing though :| it's rusted up and scratched up everywhere.

I can't even dry fire it. I need that darn magazine. Is there any way I can eliminate that feature? My BHP's I don't mind that they have it. But this star. For some reason I do.

Hello. To remove the magazine disconnect on the Star BM, you need to first remove the grips. Near the bottom of the magazine well on the left side you'll see a long leaf spring thing that's secured by a hollow tube extending through the frame. Just knock it out from the other side and the magazine "safety" is gone. It's just as easily replaced should you so desire at a later time. Magazines should drop free with the removal of this device.
