A Serious LACK of Information
Started looking for load data for one of my "Toys", An AR, with range brass, preferably with the LC head stamp, and most of my bullet stash is Hornady 55g FMJ-w/cannalure. And I have had fairly good results with Varget and Benchmark, but when I open my manual, (the Hodgdon 2012 Annual ) there is a serious lack of info on this one particular bullet/weight combo, I realize there are other manuals, I have several. But this is NOT the only place I have found this void, and it makes me curious. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed, or has any answers, got nothing out of Hornady, maybe I'll try Hodgdon, see if I get a responce.

Hornady's 8th Edition manual for .223 Remington has data listed for both Varget and Benchmark powders with the 55 fmj bullet. They used Win cases and Win primers in their test.
Benchmark--start 21.6------maximum 24.5 Varget------start 22.8------maximum 26.4 Haven't used either of these powders with 55 fmj's. I prefer Hodgdon H335 for my AR's with the Hornady 55 FMJ bullet. Hornady sometimes tends to be conservative but I added this info for your comparison. |

Yes rg1, I have that manual, I'm just curious as to the lack of info, maybe it's a Hodgdon thing, I don't know. But thanks for the input, I am kinda curious about the 335 also, how big are your groups ?

What info are you looking for? Load data for other powders?

http://data.hodgdon.com has an overwhelming amount of data for 55gr bullets in 223Rem.

I use H335 and shoots very well for what I want it to do. Plinking out to 200 yards. IIRC my load is around 25 gr seated to mag length. That charge apparently is a pretty universal plinking load that does well across alot of firearms for that bullet weight and powder
***Work up to the above mentioned charge if you decide to try it.*** |

Just about any AR .223 shooter/reloader could spend a lifetime attempting to shoot up to the capabilities of either H335 or Winchester 748.
Good thing someone else is trying another powder, otherwise I'd never know anything different. Please keep use posted. Good Luck. |

What other manuals do you have that are not offering more data for a 55g FMJ?
Hornady's 8th has plenty as do other sources?? Hornady's Manual has 5 55g bullets listed with data for 16 powders. Hardly lacking. All of the powder manufacturers and some of the bullet manufacturers have "some" data listed on their websites.

I've always used about 25gr of Varget under a 55gr Hornady SP (usually without cannelure). It's not an FMJ, but loads are similar.
It works good and is as accurate as I need it to be, but it's fairly expensive. I only used it because I also reload for .308 and it was nice to have just one powder, but now that I'll be loading on a progressive I'm going to move to a ball powder. No idea which one yet, but I'm thinking of trying W748, H335, or 2230 to see what works and meters the best. |

Hodgdon has over 40 55gr bullet loads listed with four different types of bullets, FMJ, Solid copper, Sintifire and Jacketed soft points tested with over 17 different powders. What more are you looking for? The most extensive load data for the 223/5.56 can be found at Ramshot and Accurate. |

Well, I also like to "play" with my reloads, and only about 2 or 3 are my "go-to" loads as I will try a different powder or different load much of the time. I have 6 or 8 manuals and I think there is enough info/data in these to keep me playing for quite a while, but occationally I'll run into a bullet/powder combo not covered in a manual.
