Question about DuPont IMR-4227

I was able to buy for 30 bucks an 8lb tin of DuPont IMR-4227 still had the metal seals on the tin. Tin is white whit read and black lettering, Powder smells really good and no rust in it. Looks like the day they put it in.

My question is Hodgdon H4227 and IMR-4227, are these powders compatible?

I see loads for both in my reloading manuals Lyman has a lot for the IMR-4227 for hand guns but my Lee Modern reloading has H4227.

Just want to make sure I do the right things.

Not to be short ,but NO.

Very close ,but different.

I think ,if memory serves H4227 is a bit faster.

Nope , on Hodgdons site IMR4227 is above H4227

Technically, no Hodgdon and IMR data are interchangeable.

Somewhere around the middle 80s I was using those two powders in my 357 Herrit and you could interchange IMR for Hodgdon but not the other way around as you would max with a lighter charge weight of H4227. So, I think your memory was correct for those two powders, back when they were made by separate companies anyway.

NEW IMR4227 is just the OLD discontinued H4227 renamed. OLD IMR4227(like that in metal cans) was different and is not interchangeable with older data for H4227.

ok thanks, I use the load data from my Lyman that has IMR-4227.

Loaded 14.3 grains under a 158 grain cast bullets I made. Sellet and Bellot SPP. Mixed brass.

For Dupont, use old IMR data. Now IMR & H seem to be the same powder (AR2205) if you look at Hodgdons MSDS http://www.hodgdon.com/msds.html

I agree with Buck on this one. Old IMR4227 is not the same as new IMR4227 which is H4227 actually.

My data for my 357 Maximum was worked up with old IMR4227 and it worked great. New 4227 is not the same, it correlates with H4227.

Just get an older loading book that lists IMR4227 and go to town.

All my references list IMR4227 as faster than H4227, so if you have new IMR, or new or old H4227, you have the same thing. Only if you have older IMR4227 do you need to back off a little, as it is a little quicker burning.
