7.62X51 bolt guns?

Some people did some nice conversions in the 1950's through the 1970's. One really nice rig was the K98's by Isreal. I don't have one myself but I have and still been looking for 20 years for the right one.

Spanish FR8 is a handy rifle.

Bet that has a pretty stout recoil.

Two FR-8's straddling an Enfield 2A.

Recoil on the FR-8's is not as bad as you might think

FR-8's are also more accurate than you might think. My son and I shoot in a military silhouette match at metal silhouettes of chickens, pigs, turkeys and rams at ranges of 200-500 meters, with "as issued" 50 year or older military rifles. We usually use Swiss rifles, but after the last match my son hit two of the rams at 500 meters with three rounds from one of the FR-8's.

Some years ago one of the importers brought in some Enfield Ishapore 2A's in .308 and converted them to a "Jungle Carbine" configuration. Reasonably accurate but with some stout recoil. A fun rifle for up to 200m too.

I imagine the FR-8 falls into the same category. Fun to shoot if you don't mind a sore shoulder the next day.

They are around. The Spanish Government converted some of their M43 and 1916 model Mausers by rebarreling/chambering for 7.62 x 51, and adding new front and rear sights. The story is that they were training rifles for the new, at that time, Cetme that Spain was adopting.
The 1916 conversions are small ring and referred to as an FR-7. They look similar to the FR-8, but with a straight stock.

Check Gun Broker or Auction Arms. Usually a few there.

Not many of these around.

An upgrade of the #4T in 1970 in 7.62X51.

Israeli K98 in 7.62x51

.

MJ1 - those are mighty fine FR8's. I've been looking for one
like those for a while !

This is one of my favorite 7.62x51 chambered rifles.
It is built-up rifle on a Czech action, done by the Israeli's. The Israeli's
used a lot of K98's during their defensive build up post WWII.
Ironically, many were German WWII era K98's. These
were used at first in the original 8x57 chambering. As time
went on and 7.62x51 became standard, these were re-barreled
for that cartridge.

They also built some rifles off of surplus actions, as with this
Czech action. They also used some FN actions. I have one
of each type of action, but this is the only one I have pics of
at this time.

After the "black rifles" became standard in the Israeli Defense Force,
these K98's were relegated to training and reserve. They were
eventually surplused out. This particular rifle must have stayed
in reserve after being built up and sold directly into surplus in the '90's
as it is in mint condition, inside and out.

I was lucky to find it. I found an ad on the internet a few years ago for
an "Israel mauser". There was a pic with it, but you could barely tell
that it was a rifle, much less what it really was. I called the guy
and he was a gunsmith. He had picked this rifle up on a trade some
years back and was going to build a sporter on the action. But he
said he couldn't do it "as some collector might want it". I took him
on faith that it was in nice shape and bought it. I was pretty much dumbfounded
when I opened the box.

I learned something new today!

I learned that the tube under the barrel on these rifles is for the cleaning kit and to hold the bayonett!! I also learned there is now another rifle I need to add to my collection.........

That tube is not even connected to the front of the stock--it is connected to the front sight assembly and just kinda hangs in space.

You can adjust it to add up presure on the barrel

I foinf 1'4 turn past contact tightend the second five shots. Or it could have just held a bit better, who knows it was just the wind.
