Well, here’s where we are so far:
Duke: It may be louder than other names when yelled, but can’t compare to a two fingered whistle, which is my preferred call in signal.

Scrap-
Luke is good, if I wanted to avoid Duke.

Jefe rates honorable mention as a contender.

Cane is interesting as it also means “to cock” (as in a gun) but it’s properly pronounced Connay

But, so far, the only name that might knock Gringo out of the box is Terra Fuego or some variant of that. Ground Fire. Real interesting.

Chancho - Spanish (mexican) for pig. You can say it in you best Nacho Libre voice.

Perro - spanish for dog

First: I hope you stick with "Gringo." "Pistolero" is a bit long for a dog's name. I deduce it would inevitably be shortened to "Pisser," or something equally unflattering.

I hope your inspiration, listening on your iPod, was either the Allen Wayne Damron OR Tim Henderson version of "The Gringo Pistolero." I have ALWAYS been a big fan of the song, and the story behind it. I heard the back story directly from composer Tim Henderson, which makes it all the more valuable to me.

Tim based the song/story line loosely on Army Captain Leonard Matlack's rescue of the two Army aviators from Mexifcan insurgentes in 1920. Hey, the excellent song is about as authentic as the story line in "The Wind and the Lion" movie - - Mrs. Edith Pedicaris was in reality a male diplomat . . . .

Anyhow, if for some reason you decide that "Gringo" is not exactly right, I submit that "Leonard" would make a good nombre del perro.

The border bandit troubles are referenced in the review of the book, Bosque Bonito here. The entire Captain Matlack/Chico Cano interaction is detailed in Elton Miles' excellent book, More Tales of the Big Bend, Texas A&M Univ Press, 1988.

I hope to meet Gringo, Leonard, whatever, in the future.

That last one made think of a variation of it: Double Ott's Lo Tengo Abajo (I have it down). Or Tengo for short. I'm assuming your all male dog doesn't want to dance (tango), but does want to "go get it" and take it down.

These pups have Spanish Bull Mastiff in them, yes. But they're predominantly Indian Dogs and named for the tribe: Choctaw. Our last one was BLT's Miko Wattah. Choctaw for "Chief Hunter". Known as Mookie. They're pure (Native) American.

Thanks for all the suggestions, people. We're not settled yet. He's still being called "Pup" and "Baby Boy".

My previous Mastiff's registered name was Hipshot (actually - Avalons Hipshot O'King).

He was CharleyIII. The one above is CharleyIV (Farpoint Charley O'King)

I had a Rhodesian Ridgeback named Leo (Lion Hound) before I went to Mastiffs some 20 years ago.

I guess Otis is out - in fact, that's why I'm called "OJ" by most people that I call friends.
