which should i buy GSG STG-44 .22 or a HK mp5 .22

which should i buy, a GSG STG 44 or a HK mp5 .22. I am looking at buying one or the other of these two .22s. Wish to hear others opinions and thoughts on which one is better.

The StG44 is a really big, heavy .22. If you are not really into the history of it, I'd say it's not a very practical rifle. The sights are early-20th Century correct, and not very good. The mags are extremely long, making bench use difficult. The "cool factor" is off the charts.
The MP5, in any caliber, leaves me cold, but the rimfire version is going to be lighter, more compact, and with better sights, so probably more useful.
A shooting buddy has a rimfire SIG, which is some sort of "trainer" for the .223 version, and he really likes it. You might consider that.
Check out this video at about the 9:30 point, for some short reviews of the StG and SIG:

Have you considered an AR-15 in .22LR (such as those made by CMMG)?

It's handier than the massive STG-44 .22 and much better made than the potmetal and plastic HK MP5 .22. It's just an AR with a .22LR barrel & bolt, after all - almost all other parts are standard AR. Mags are much cheaper and easier to find, as well (PSA were selling the Black Dog mags for about $15 last week).

STG-44 is very heavy!

I stopped at my local gun shop and they were selling an STG-44 .22 cal for about 400 or 500. I picked it up and it must have weighed 8-10 pounds! Felt very sturdy! I have heard good things about the MP5 .22 cal, and I have also held it. It is fairly heavy, it resembles the weight of the 9mm MP5 and is a very good looking gun. If you want a lighter gun, go with the MP5.

well i can get the STG 44 for $610 and its in stock......the mp5 would be $530 and would be back ordered. I have read in reviews that the mp5 collapsible stock is wiggly when you are trying to shoot thus loose accuracy.

Early StGs apparently had wiggly stocks, due to a weak attachment between the wood and the steel collar that attaches it to the receiver. Mine is solid between the wood and collar, but there is a bit of side-to-side between the collar and receiver. I don't think it's a huge deal, and probably historically accurate, since the CETME and other follow-ons have two retaining pins.

The Walther-made Umarex MP5's have outstanding cosmetics. The MP44/22 is certainly kewl and builds muscle while you shoot it.

Mags are not easily found for either these days. It becomes a coin flip.

Maybe also consider;

Umarex is based in Free America, Arkansas.

American Tactical is in NY.

Posts on ARFCOM make it seem that unlike Magpul, ATI is reluctant to swat back at NY gov't for what they did to NY'rs.

Maybe don't support NY based business?

Actually they are made by Umarex at the Umarex factory near Cologne, Germany, not by Walther, whose factory is in Ulm. Umarex owns a majority stake in Walther and likes to slap the name on their products.

You buy what you like. I was holding one of the MP5SD models and had a peice break off in my hand. I looked at the STG44 model and from through the mag well I saw what looked like either the bolt or some part of the receiver that looked like the cheapest metal in the world.

I would touch anything they make and would put my money into a proven 10/22 or one of the CMMG type M4 styled .22s

Personally for me, I am looking at a CZ bolt gun, mag fed, bull barrel in 17HMR, Squirrels will fear me

The StG bolt/spring unit is almost identical in design to that of the CMMG. Looking into an aluminum AR frame and the same view of the Zamak (alloy of zinc and aluminum) StG frame is very similar.
