H335 in a .270

I will start out by saying that I'm still fairly new to reloading but I'm trying to catch up as fast as I can.

With that being said I was wondering why there is no reloading data for H335 to use in a 270 Winchester? You can find it for 30-30, .308, 30-06 but not the 270. The reason I found this out is that for hunting white tail I have been using my brother's Remington 700 .30-06 with 125gr Nosler Ballistic tip leads and shooting 53.5 grains of H335 (The current range on their website is 49.0 to 54.0 grains). It seems to work really well and I thought to keep things simple I would like to use a similar load in my Remington 700 270 with the 130grain ballistic tips. But there is no load data for this, and since I really don't want to damage me, somebody else, or the gun I was wondering what some people with experience thought about it.

270, H335, somewhere around 53.0gr powder, 130gr lead, think it'll work?

Hodgdon list H-335 loads for 270 on their web, site but they're all for 110 gr and below.

Yeah, I was talking with some old guy down at Northwoods today and he said that H335 is just too fast of a powder for the 270 with the heavier bullets. He said to buy some IMR4831, according to him it goes together with the 270 like vanilla ice cream and birthday cake. I guess I'll find out.

Since I don't reload for supreme accuracy I was just hoping to not have pounds of powder laying around for each individual rifle. Oh well.

I use H4198SC on all my cartridges in that bore/capacity range.

6.5-284 with 129 grain bullet

25-06 with 117 grain bullet

.270 with 130 grain bullet

Very consistent, high velocity, and VERY accurate.

IMR 4831 would be a good choise for 270 win. It is also very good in 243 win. The powders most often recommended by the manuals are IMR 4831 and H-4831. However, due to the large charge weights, I like to work with IMR 4064 and Varget instead. 48.5 grains of IMR 4064 vs. 56 grains of IMR 4831 is a big recoils reduction since I can't even buy an after market recoil pad for my Mossberg 100 ATR. Varget and IMR 4064 are also nice because they are broad spectrum powders. They have applications for everything from 223 remington through 30-06 Springfield.

H335 is too fast for the 270 with bullets over 120 grains. The 30/06 has a bigger bore so the time/pressure curve is different than the 270. Try WW 760, WW WMR, H414, and H4350. Some gunscribe long departed named Jack O'Connor used H4831 for decades in that caliber. He shot the 130 gr. mostly, and gave the 270 it's reputation. Hope this helps. CB.

Reloading the 270

I've been reloading for mine for a long time. Settled down to 3 loads.

90g Sierra (varmint round) IMR 3031 with filler
130g Nosler H4831 Jack O'Connner's load still works
150g Nosler Norma MRP 3000 fps chrongraphed from my Remington 700 BDL 22" barrel no flattened primers, loose pockets, or hard extraction. I get 10 reloads per case, then toss them, never had a problem.
