It's just a string thing...

Wondering if someone can advise me where I can find cotton string [waxed?] like that used to stitch the WWII CZ27 holster that accompanied the war bringback of my uncle.

The holster is in great shape but the stitching holding the thumb strap has rotted away.

I'd like to repair it as authentically as possible.

A lot of toilet bowl gaskets are beeswax. Lifetime supply at local plumbing supply for a buck or so.

Try a Tandy Leather or Leather Factory store. If you don't have one of those in your area, look up a saddle maker. Boot/shoe repair store might have it, too.

Denny, I don't know if they have them in your area, but here in Texas, we have Michaels and or MJ Designs stores that have leather crafting kits with the waxed nylon thread on an awl sticher for about 7-8 dollars. I bought one and use it to make pocket holsters for compacts (it has blossomed into friends and friends of friends, I think I'm going to have to start charging to slow down).They are also handy for repairs to tents, belts, purses,ect.

Waxed dental floss might make an acceptable substitute.

What you likely want is shown on the catalog page hat runt_of_the_litter sent, as waxed Irish linen. I bought "waxed linen five-cord" from Tandy Corp for many years. Best bet might be to go to a neighborhood boot and shoe shop, the older the better, or to a saddle repair shop, take your project with you, and tell the saddler or tack repairman what you want. Offer to buy a few yards from him. (Not being sexist here--I've never met a female doing that kind of work.)

While you're at it, see if they'll sell you a few blunt-end needles of the proper size. Saddle stitching (and holster hand sewing) is done by punching the holes with an awl.

Come to think of it, Tandy used to sell a "Saddle stitching kit," which included needles, waxed five cord, awl, overstitch wheel and edger. I bought my first some 30 years ago for about 3.95. Probably ten or 15 bucks by now.
