Colt Python
Back in 1977 I bought a new one nickle plated. The S.N. had an "E" suffix.
Today I saw a used blue one. It had a 5 digit serial # with no letter suffix or prefix. Any way of telling about when it was made? How about what it`s worth? Real nice shape but it has a Leupold mounted on it with no rear sight. I`m not crazy about the scope so the price would have to be real right. Thanks. |

Dinosaur, the Colt Python you're looking at was made sometime between 1955-1969. Sometime during 1969 Colt began a new serial number range using the letter prefix 'E'. Here is a list of production years with the corresponding serial number range for the Colt Python:
1955: 1-299 1956: 300-1649 1957: 1650-5549 1958: 5550-7049 1959: 7050-9099 1960: 9100-13099 1961: 13100-18799 1962: 18800-24799 1963: 24800-30799 1964: 30800-41399 1965: 41400-50499 1966: 50500-60999 1967: 61000-73799 1968: 73800-89999 1969: 90000-99999 (After serial number 99999, Colt started with E1001) A Blued Colt Python in excellent condition could be worth about $650-$900. Hope this helps! Steve Mace

Thanks Steve.
That`s exactly what I was looking for. The gun is in real nice shape. I can get it for $600 but I`d have to buy and install a new rear sight. Also I`m not sure how the scope is mounted. I`m hoping it isn`t drilled into the back strap. I`ve never really looked into scoped handguns so I need to check further.
