Hot load for S&W 625...
Hi guys,
Can you suggest me a hot load for .45 Auto Rim to use im my 625 ? What I need to know is if this revolver can handle loads far up than the loads for .45 acp. I was told it could handle loads for the .45 Long Colt, is it true ? I'm planning to hunt with this gun, and a hot load would be great. Thanks in advance, Andre Tiba - Brazil |

Get a good reloading manual and look for .45 acp+P.
Go to the powder manufacturers websites and look up the data for the powder you have availible. .45 acp was designed to duplicate roughly the ballistics of .45 Colt the round designed for the Colt SAA. |

I have only tested loads in my Brazilian Export M1917. Because it is an older pistol, 1937, it needs large bullets to avoid leading. I tried 6.0 grs Unique, and 6.5 grains Unique. In this lightweight pistol I found the recoil excessive, especially with the 6.5 grain load.
However if you plan to shoot 45 AR in a modern pistol, these loads certainly fit into your hot loads category. Even the 6.0 grain load duplicates some of my mid range 45 LC loads. I would not recommend them for older pistols like mine, nor for any coverted Webley. These load bent the top strap of my Webley!. M1917 S&W Brazilian Export 5" Barrel 250 LRN (.454) 6.0 grs Unique thrown, R-P AR cases, CCI300 primers 20-Jan-02 T = 44°F Ave Vel =833 Std Dev =25 ES 79.6 Low 789 High 869 N = 12 Heavy recoil, aimpt about 6" low at 25 yard. But very accurate 250 LRN (.454) 6.5 grs Unique thrown, R-P AR cases, CCI300 primers 20-Jan-02 T = 44°F Ave Vel = 888 Std Dev = 31 ES= 103.3 Low= 844 High= 947 N=12 heavy recoil, aimpt 5 OC below target, too heavy a load |

heres what I discovered
they make hard cast bullets, some are expensive. but no matter how hard they are, they lead the barrel.
I haven't chronographed these yet: from my 4" smith 25, I load a hard cast 250g RNFP over 12 g of BluDot, with a CCI large pistol MAG primer; this load is easy on my N frame, and its accurate; and yes, these loads lead old thumper terribly. but, I break out my outters de-lead machine, hook every thing up and in 60 minutes every bit of that nasty lead is gone. its magic. |
