Forming 17 Hornet from 22 Hornet brass

How efficient is the process of using 22 Hornet Brass for the 17 Hornady Hornet? I have several hundred 22 Hornet cases, a couple pounds of Lil Gun, a thousand or so Rem 6 1/2 primers. I need another gun like I need to have polio. But it sounds interesting and since Ruger and CZ may have offerings in 17 Hornet what better way to waste the next year than getting a new rifle and trying various loads?

Resizing 22 Hornet to 17 Hornet should be a straight forward process. Since you are necking the case down in size, the neck thickness may be a concern.

Sizing down a 22 Hornet to 17 is very simple. If you have the 17 die, just use Imperial Die Wax (just a thin film on the case) will do the trick.

However, you will need a neck turner to reduce the excess brass on the neck. You will also need the correct mandrel; a expander mandrel and die, etc. The list just keeps getting longer and longer. I suggest K&M neck turners, but there are others out there that are also very good.

When I size down necks, I try to do it in 10% steps.

For 22 neck -> 17 neck, I would make an intermediate die.

Put an inch of 7/8-14 threaded rod in the lathe and bore a .22" hole, polish, and it is ready. Just takes a few minutes.

Check Hornady's website. They have factory loads. Also, checkout the Savage. They have a 17 Hornet rifle.
Look at the "Accurate Shooter" web site (the old 6mmbr.com). They have a bunch of stuff on the 17.

Look for a cartridge drawing for both the 17 and 22 Hornet. That will give you the demensions you need. Or measure the 22 Hornet case, subtract the 17 bullet od and there you have it.

According to Wiki necking down .22 Hornet may not be optimal for new production guns in .17 Hornet..
