Quick info please
Dealing with scrape metal company! They say brass is 1.55 a lb. just brass, brass only. Question: Are Winchester primers brass? Are CCI primers brass? THANK YOU, for your response.

Hello, Poline. If primers & their anvils are not brass, I would sure like to know what metal they are. Just take a file to one..once thru the plating..you'll see yellow metal. Now the 209 shotshell batttery cup is steel, but the primer cup in middle is still brass. Man-oh-man, I 'm sure glad I didn't grow up with this internet stuff, & only had old fashoned books to rely upon..The crap that is posted is mind bogling!

I've certainly never sold any primers to the local metal recycler, but I can't imagine they'd complain about the coating metal on CCI primers. By weight there's more crud in the cups of used primers than the thin coating on the outside. Usually places like that will take into account stuff like that and price accordingly.

I've found a web site that will give you credit for any brass you have regardless of its condition or type including rim fire brass. I think it is Star but I'll double check that and get back to you. I do know they offer a good deal on it as credit towards loading components. Google it as once fired brass and you should find the company.

dirty brass
Scrap yard ended up taking my brass, spent primers inclued, for 1.30 a lb.
reason being 1.55 was for " clean brass", whatever. Money for my reloading. |

MOST scrap yards will take cartridge brass, not all. Some are afraid of live ammo. And yes primers in metallic cartridges are brass. Try the magnet.
I sell lots of brass with primers in, no problem. Also sell deprimed brass as well as .22 brass. Frankly I find $1.55 a pound to be a little low. Spot copper price today is $4.27 a pound, cartridge brass is 70% copper so the equivalent price is $2.99 per pound for cartridge brass. Generally I get about 80% of spot so I would expect to get $2.40 per pound today for cartridge brass. Shop around a little bit. Larger quantities of brass will usually bring more money per pound. |
