Argh! .223 Rem. Fixed it. Midway has a sale on LC 09 brass right now; looks like that might be a good way to go.

In a bolt gun, if looking for the best, you're probably ahead of the game to just jump to Lapua or the Hornady match brass. If you're extra-super picky about how you prep cases, these are your babies.
Now, I am an AR-15 shooter, and even for 600-yard ammo I don't get overly fussy. The Lake City brass lasts a long time and is relatively cheap. AND, get this, it frequently has a HIGHER capacity than commercial cases. Yeah, the old trusted adage, "reduce 5% with military cases" may not apply universally to all 5.56 brass. Best bet is to weigh a few, and then see how much powder they hold filled to the top of the case mouth. Short version: Lake City is good, but may take some extra prep for that nth degree of accuracy.

Thanks, all. I'm still learning the ropes and am not looking for bench rest competition accuracy. The Lapua's probably more than I need at this point. Think I'll go with some of the new Lake City for a while, and once I've learned a bit more about load development, consider some of the higher quality brass.

i have shot FC, Lake City, PPU, PMC, R-P, W-W and a couple others i cant remember in my semi auto, and have achieved very good accuracy with all of them. i dont really see a need to use lapua or any other fancy brass at all, period. if you just want to spend the money then go ahead, you can get great accuracy with any brass. i have reloaded all of the above several times without issue. its your money!!

I have never shot Lapua or Hornady match, but of the others I get best results with LC.

Handloader mag did a test of all components using a Cooper rifle in 223 for the platform. Across the board, primers, brass, and bullets, Remington components out shot everything and produced the smallest groups and sometimes by quite a margin. The 223 is ridiculously easy to get to shoot accurately. Pick a brand and go with it- just don't pay a lot for it. There is nothing wrong with LC brass. I use it in the 200 meter offhand open sights matches. Works great for me.
