Hen & rooster knives

Guru1911 needs some assistance from forum members:

Anyone in forum land, have any personal experience with "hen & rooster" brand of fixed blade outdoor knives???

Thinking about purchasing several for christmas / hannukah gifts this year. Any opinions pro or con would be appreciated.

no experience with the hen and rooster but for a fixed blade you might check out the mora's made in sweden may not be exactly what your looking for seeing how its going to be a gift, but for a knife they are good quality,sharp and inexpensive.

I have two Hen and Rooster bone handled knives. They are not fixed blade. Both are folders.

These are really well built quality pieces. Take and hold a very good edge.

The hunter size, as I recall, was pretty expensive. It is about the same size as the old Buck Hunter 110. I want to say I got both of them from Smoky Mountain Knife Works.

Sadly, they are so nice, I do not use them. . . .go figure. They both hold an edge fine enough to break a hair in both directions. Toward and away from the root. Not many knives will do that and not a lot of people have enough patience to work on a blade to get it that way.

Here's a Hen/Rooster out doorsie kinda knife....a real beast. made very well.
I would not shy away from them at all.

gosh, that is so beautiful and authentic looking. Carry it? right. Not in my stupidest moments would I take it afield, but that is a wonderful piece for a collector or reenactor. it's perfect.

You might look around and find someone to carve that crown. Put some sort of decoration on the flat surface.

Hen and rooster are classic, fantastic products.

I don't do fixed blade knives, but I have bought a bunch of Hen & Rooster knives for friend and famly, nothing to complain about, they're all quality.

To me, Hen and Rooster were the best. Last one Iordered was made in China. That finished me with the brand. All I have to say.

The H&R knives were originally made by H. Bertram in Solingen. The H&R works was acquired by A.G. Russell in the early 1980s. A.G. kept the quality up until the company went bankrupt.
Now, most of their knives are Chinese. There is no Hen & Rooster factory-it's just someone trading on the name.
BTW- H & R never made fixed blade knives.
I'm sure they are no worse than the Remington and Winchester Chinese knives.

Always seemed overpriced to me. Lotsa good knives on the market at more affordable prices.

Gentlemen: I sincerely appreciate your input regarding my inquiry on the "hen & rooster" brand of knives. As i am medically retired & living on my 40 years of #ss disability, i must be very careful as to where i distribute what little discretionary funds i have access to. I cannot afford to waste my $$$$$ on anything that is shoddy or crudely made.

Regarding past cutlery purchases, i usually purchase "cold steel" or "crkt", but i found the hen & rooster product at such a low price. May also consider buying "boker" maybe as an alternative.

Boker is another brand that is very good. Be careful, there are two. At least there used to be. One was American and the other was German. Both had the same "tree" logo. If in doubt, look at the blade for the word "Solingen."

The American brand was nowhere near the quality of the German.

My Dad was a HUGE fan of Boker. The steel in his stockman was so hard, the edge of the blade would chip rather than curl if you cut into a board with a hidden nail.

That was the first knife I was ever able to sharpen fine enough to cut a hair in both directions.

I have several today ( German ) and they are quality knives.

Muchas gracias, geetarman, for the mucho importante informacion concerning your personal experience with the "boker" brand of cutlery.

Did some additional investigation on the "ontario" brand of fixed blade knives---very positive feedback from the consumer reviews i was able to access. Will do some additional research into these.

Thanks again for all who responded to my plea for assistance regarding "h&r" knives.

As long as it is an older German one. I had one of the Boker USA knives and could not sharpen that thing worth a hoot. Some other brands that are generally high quality at low price are Kershaw and Browning - but both of those tend to be made in China these days.

THE H&R FIXED BLADES I AM MOST INTERESTED IN ARE THE MODEL #5013.

HOWEVER, I HAVE HAD A LONG TRACK RECORD THE PAST 25 YEARS PURCHASING EITHER A COLD STEEL OR COLUMBIA RIVER PRODUCT (folders / fixed blade) MODELS. SINCE I AM NOW RETIRED & LIVING ON A FIXED INCOME, THE HEN & ROOSTER MODEL MENTIONED ABOVE IS ABOUT $30.00 FROM NUMEROUS INTERNET SOURCES.
