whats a good price for a decent SW m66?

basically what the title says...my dad is looking for his next revolver, so i showed him a picture of a model 66 and he wants one. whats a good price to pay for one in 80-90% condition?

Glenn's right on the money. 80% - around $400 and 90% - around $600. that is what I would expect to see.

Prices vary a lot by region of the country ...and how many are around, in your area, right now....

I've seen some model 66's ( excellent condition ) not 80% - 90% guns ...go as high as $ 700....it just depends....

But $ 500 - $ 600 is probably as good a range as you can advise him ....now he'll just need to shop, and see what he can find locally...

I don't know the % of my 4 inch 66-7 but it looks great and functions perfectly. Paid $450.

I think across the US, under $400 is a good price, and then $400 or more, depending on which one it is, could be a good deal as well. Barrel length and P&R status affect pricing.

I'm surprised how consistent the prices are accross the country. I just paid $499 for a former police 66-1 4" here in Connecticut's "gold coast".

I've seen them go for way more on the auction sites, though.

Varies not only by region, but by barrel length.

2.5": $475 to $550
3": $600 to $700 (rarest of all barrel lengths in the 66 line, and highly prized as well)
4": $450 to $525
6":: $400 to $475

I've seen a few 3" versions on gunbroker go for $650-ish in the past year or two. My high bid on one of those was $600, so I let it go. I saw another locally for $700 about a year ago, and one about 4 years ago for $600.

The most common ones I see locally are the 6" models, and most of the time they are in the mid to high $400s. I've not seen one in more than a year though.

FYI, S&W revolver prices in NC tend to be higher than most other places. Deals can be found, but they are few and far between. The best I've ever done in NC was a 5" S&W K Frame Transitional M&P for $230 2 or 3 years ago, and a 4" 15-3 in NIB condition for $309 4 years ago. I bought a 2.5" 66-1 (P&R) in VA and had it shipped to an FFL for much cheaper ($450 out the door) than they usually go for in NC (mid $500s).

So in NC, the days of the $400 magnum K Frame are just about over. Heck, most .38s I see (Model 10s and 15s mostly) are in the upper $300s. I saw a well worn nickel 4" Model 10-6 (about 70% finish wise) with a $750 price tag outside Charlotte 4 years ago.

I guess it depends upon your area. I know it's not exactly apples to apples, but it just took me several months to sell a 99% S&W 19 2 1/2" for $550.00

In my neck of the woods,,,
The stainless S&W's don't go for anywhere near as much as the blued models,,,

I recently paid $400.00 for a very clean Model 67,,,
A Model 64 recently went for $375 at the Evil Pawn Shop.

Remember though,,,
These are all pre-panic prices.

I paid $399 for a m66-1 4" about 4 years ago–I think a similar gun would go for $499 here now, maybe more. I could probably sell it for over $500 in a heartbeat

In January I picked up a pair of 4" 66's (a dash 1, and a no dash) for around a grand for the pair. The next week I found a mint model 19 for $400. It's been a great year so far!
