.222rem & .270win one powder?

Can anyone help me please? I am after some feedback about the use of one powder for both calibers?
Most of my shooting will be while I am out hunting with my .270. It will be used out to about 300 metres on medium sized game (ferral pigs) until my skill level improves.
The .222 will mostly be used on small game out to about 200 metres.
The next problem I face is that the only powder readily available to me is the 'ADI' range. I have:
100 x .277 'Sierra Varminter' 90g HP
100 x .223 'Super Roo' 55gr SP BT
200 x Large federal primers
1000 x Large CCI primers
1000 x No 7 1/2 remington primers
I plan to generally use about 130gr projectiles in the .270.

IF IT IS TO BE, IT IS UP TO ME.

G day mate good to see another aussie on here. AR2208 seems to be the powder for you. Its the only one listed for the .270 and .222 combined data. It does not perfrorm the best verlocities in the .222 around 3100 is the best you will get with a 55gr bullet.

You will get between 3400-3600fps in the .270win with the 90gr bullet.
You will get between 2800-2900fps in the .270win with the 130gr bullet.

Sometimes using one powder for both just wont cut it for accuracy though and you might find you will end up with several diff brands and burning rates. I used 2207 in my .222 and could not group under an inch at 100yd. I switched to Win748 using all same other components and i get great groups now.

Starting load Max load

Bullet 55gr .222 Bullet 55gr .222

AR2208 23gr 2860fps 25gr 3100fps

Bullet 90gr .277

AR2208 51gr 3410fps 55gr 3600fps

Bullet 130gr .277

AR2208 43gr 2800fps 46gr 2930fps

Hope this helps, please approach max loads with caution. These are loads from Nick Harvey's Eighth Edition Reloading Manual. He is the leading gun expert and reloading expert in Australia. All his data and research comes from hunting rifles in field conditions. Nick is also the technical Editior of the Sporting shooters magazine here in Australia im guessing you have a few of them. If you can get to your gun dealer grab a copy of his reloading manual you will find everything you will need for reloading.

Good luck, butta

Just a couple of ideas: WW748 as Butta suggests, or Varget. I use 748 for 223, 243, and I have used it for 308. I do not load Varget, but I know people who use it for loading everything from 223 to 30-06. I believe I read somewhere that Varget is an Australian powder. If you are into rod-style extruded powders, IMR3031 would be a good bet if you can get it down inder.

I have used IMR 3031 for both of those calibers. It works very well in the 222, and was OK in the 270, however I would prefer a slower burning powder for the 270. That is a tough call when there is so much difference in the capacity of those two calibers. Good Luck.

IMR powders

IMR powders are near impossible to get here in Australia. I have some 4320 left which i use in my .243 i wont know what to do when it runs out. . Varget is readily avaliable though.

My local firearms dealer only stocks ADR powder and I am only a low volume reloader at this point. The next problem I face is the next closest dealer is about 600 km. I may end up with 2 types of powder but was just trying to keep things simple,no way to load the wrong one.

Just in case you don't have it, here's the ADI website for data:
http://www.adi-limited.com/handloaders-guide/rifle.asp

Your ADI 2208 is the same powder we have here sold by Hodgdon as Varget. It will work in both and depending on how much speed you need out of the 222, it should do the job. You can get a 55 gr bullet to almost 3100'ps and that ain't bad for a 222.
