Same thing I wore on permanent Shore Patrol about a hundred years ago or so in Los Angeles Ca. Not quite as sharp with it as I used to be but I think it will still hit minute of bad guy at 25 yards or better.

O/G,

Any one of those rounds/group put COM would be a "day-ender".

I carried the G35, G23, USP9, and 686 at different times. I like them all. Still carry them all. If I can shoot 100/100 with it, I'll take it.

From that list, I would go with the 1911. Partly for the 45 ACP aspect, partly for the manual safety in a weapon snatch scenario.

Sig 229 - I'd want the best. Trusted by our "Operators" and they would know.

Most likely a glock simPly for the commonality of magazines between full size and subcompact. Yes I would be carrying a subcompact as a bug.

Revolver

I think I would go with a revolver. I would lean toward the 357 magnum. I do have a respect for capacity though. I would go with one of those new S&W 8 shot 357 magnums with a few moon clips.

My last duty was as a Deputy Sheriff, My Office had a list of authorized weapons and authorized duty caliber. My choice was a Para P-16 high cap 40 S&W. I had adj. Night Sights and a Hoage Rubber Grip added. This was my third 1911 that I have carried on duty. It was and still is one of the guns that I currently qualify with on my National Concealed Weapon Permit. Never had a problem with this weapon, it just works and thats all that matters.

Our Dept. carries Glock 22 Gen 4's.

One time when we were training with our last gen glocks, saw one blow apart, (Crazyist thing I have ever seen at the gun range) they said it was bad ammo or something like that. I like the glock alot, but I like my Sig p226 9mm better, it was my step dad's duty weapon.

My .02 cents

Late 70's early 80's carried a 1911.
Early 80's K frame Smith (66-1) then upgraded to an L frame until 1996 when we went to Beretta 96D's .
from 1998 to 2011 it was an H&K USP/c or a P2K 40 LEM.

Currently in my contract gig I carry a Glock 31C.

Glock 17 out of your list. My choice, 1911 .45 or Browning Hi-Power.

USP .45, nothing wrong with 9mm but it is far more capable of overpenetration, and you didn't list any other HK's. Reason for picking one of the most costly guns? Police hardly fire their sidearms on duty, so why not put all of the money you would spend on unused ammo, towards a gun that is ultra-reliable, I know Glocks are too, but I have heard bad things about sloppy lock-up, as well as about the trigger, ergos and grip angle.

SIG's are heavier than most other guns listed.

Ditto with 1911's, plus, they tend to have a break-in period, not to mention being 101 years old. It also shares the XD's over-the-edge flaw, the grip safety.

Beretta 92's are heavy for what they are packing, plus the excessive size, and exposed barrel, I am not it means less slide to manipulate.

Literally nothing wrong with your average revolver, but they could leave a LEO undergunned against someone packing a semi-auto

Not a cop or ever been one... but have a comment none the less...

I took a Citizens Acadamy course locally, where we got to meet all the cops, do a ride along, see what they all do, & actually got to shoot their guns...

local PD uses M&P's in 40 S&W... the ammo we were shooting was cheap bulk ammo, & not everyone in the class was at all familiar with guns, some had never shot before... interestingly, there was no malfunction even with total newbies who were likely limp wristing... or cheap bulk ammo

needless to say... I was impressed with how the guns functioned

You left the Glock 21 off the list. It would be my pick for a duty gun.

Maybe so, but here is the bottom line. Lawyers help choose police firearms with a view to reducing the possibility of a lawsuit that could bankrupt a small city.

If an officer goes off on his own and uses a non-issue/non approved gun, or non-issue/non-approved ammunition, and is sued for something involving that gun/ammunition (like over-penetration) he/she will be fired and the jurisdiction will NOT defend the "rogue officer" in court. That could mean the officer will have to carry the burden of a judgment alone.

Worse yet, if an officer carries his own weapon or ammunition and uses it, and there is a public outcry about the gun or ammunition used, a prosecutor may well choose to prosecute the officer on (for example) a charge of using excessive force. The result could be conviction and prison time.

So, let's hear about how "I would carry my Blippo Model X and Bloppo ammo, and not that stupid stuff they issue." That kind of bluster and BS sounds real impressive on a web site; maybe not so good in a courtroom.

From your list, I'd choose the P229.

Why? (familiarity) Because it has all the right controls in all the right places (I'm a p226 owner)

I like 1911's and have several.

I'm a huge revolver guy and own more of them than anything else.

And I've got several Glocks so I'm very familiar with them.

A couple of years ago I bought an HK45. Liked everything about it except for the safety position and the whole DA/SA thing. But the pistol felt so great in my hand and I shot it so well, it was worth trying to improve. Early this year I ordered a LEM conversion kit for it and swapped everything out. That did it for me. The HK45 with LEM. The best .45 ACP I own, including the custom 1911. I would feel very comfortable carrying one as an LEO. Maybe get an HK45c for when I needed to carry concealed.

I do have to admit I love .357 SIG as well. And I hear you can buy an HK P30 LEM and then get a German made replacement barrel to change it to a .357 SIG. I can't pick that as my first choice since I don't actually own one but I would sure like to try one out.

"National Concealed Weapon Permit"? Are you refering to carrying under LEOSA?

Same thing I carry for armed security work...my HK USP Compact 9mm with LEM trigger.

But from your list, I'd be happy with the Sig P229 anyday, Used to own one in 9mm and really liked it.
