The Definitive Answer (or one of them)

The chart of all charts for ballisticians, or at least the best and most comprehensive one i've found, is attached as a link. This comes from Hornady, and while they don't manufactuere every possible chambering, they do produce most of the hundreds out there and i think they do it better than most.
Anyhow this chart provides a quick reference into velocity, energy, and the various configuration available by caliber. Have fun!

This photo may be of interest: http://sub-silentsuppressors.com/wp-...Comparisom.jpg

It's pretty large (3795 x 1600) so you can see the various cartridges in good detail.

As a complete newby I am wondering if anyone has a handgun pistol caliber chart or could at least list gun calibers from smallest to largest. I especially am confused with, for example, .380 vs .38 calibers and the magnum loads. Thanks for your patience with me!
Some excellent posts here!

It can be very confusing, especially when you start looking at "dash" calibers (i.e., .30-06, .30-40 Krag, .38/200, .45-70) and the frequent use of "nominal" caliber (.38 Special = .357") and the occasional use of precise caliber (.454 Casull = .454") Some general rules of thumb that have helped me:

When the caliber is 2 digits (.38 Special) it is usually nominal. When 3 digits (.357 Mag) it's more likely to be precise (but not always; witness the .480 Ruger = .475"). When the caliber includes a 'dash' or 'slash' the second digit has some significance, at least historically. .45-70 was originally a nominal .45 caliber bullet over 70 grains of black powder. .38/200 (a British caliber in WWII more commonly knowns as the .38 S&W) was a nominal .38 caliber / 200 grain bullet. The .30-06 Springfield was originally commercialized in 1906. The .25-06 is a .257" bullet in a casing necked down from the 30-06. The .30-40 Krag is a .308" bullet over 40 gr of smokeless powder. Most names in the caliber designate either the creator (Krag, Casull, Linebaugh, Rigby) or the company that developed it (Springfield, Rem Mag, Weatherby, Ruger)

The "magnum" designation usually means a more powerful load on a pre-existing lighter round, and always comes in a longer casing to prevent the magnum from being chambers in the wrong gun (i.e., .357M/.38Spcl, .44M/.44Spc, etc). "Super magnum" and "maxi" or "maximum" (mostly Dan Wesson revolvers) use extended magnum casings and are essentially "magnum magnums" (e.g., the .445SM is about 50% more powerful than a .44M; it uses the same caliber bullet but a casing that is 0.3" longer.) A revolver chambered in a magnum can often but not always chamber and safely shoot the lighter load, but rarely (if ever) the reverse. Thus, any .44M can chamber a .44Spc. A .445SM can chamber either the .44M or .44Spc. A .460 S&W Mag can camber and shoot both the .454 Casull and .45 Colt. This is not generally true for pistols.

Some terms have become archaic but are still in use. For example, the .45 Colt is also known as the .45 Long Colt because many years ago there was also a .45 Short Colt. The .45 Colt was developed for black powder and as such the casing is long relative to the normal loadings. This combined with the much higher strength of modern revolvers allows the .45 Colt to be loaded all the way up to full magnum loads (equally the ballistics of a .44 mag) or kept very light ("cowboy" loads).

Then there is the difference between revolver and pistol calibers. Generally (there are a few exceptions) pistols require "rimless" cartridges to allow proper stacking of rounds in the magazine, while revolvers use rimed cartridges to allow easy extraction of spent casings. A number of revolvers are chambered in rimless calibers - most commonly the .45 acp and 10mm - which generally require moon clips for proper extraction (and in come cases to hold the round in the proper position). There are a number of calibers that were first developed for one and then adapted to the other, such as:

.45 Colt (revolver) gave birth to the .45 acp ("automatic colt pistol", aka "auto") which quickly gave birth both the .45 acp in moon clips and .45 Auto Rim for revolvers.

.357 Mag (r) was the inspiration for the .357 Sig (p)

10mm (p) & .40 S&W (p) were adapted to revolvers using moon clips; a 10mm revolver also chambers the .40 S&W but not visa versa.

And then there are cartridges developed for no clear reason, like the .45 GAP (Glock automatic pistol) with is basically a .45 acp with just enough changes that nothing but a GAP can chamber it, but not enough changes to actually improve the ballistics.

First, it's best to understand that caliber and cartridge are not the same. For example, .380 and .38 are the same caliber but different cartridges. The .357 magnum is the same caliber as those.

Ahhh, same calibers, just different case designs. A given caliber for one platform is the same across the board. A 9mm pistol is the same caliber as a 9mm revolver, etc... Caliber ≠ cartridge.

mikehaas, that is quite a list.

Didn't you miss the .333 OKH, though? Or did I just not see it ?

Good job, and thanks for posting it.

Thanks Mike!... It's a good reminder for anyone who's been around so long they've "forgotten" how esoteric the subject of firearms actually is.

Absolutely no reason to resurrect a nearly 7 year old thread just to add a list of cartridges, many of which are not handgun cartridges.

Mike, you're welcome to repost your list in the General Discussion forum, but please don't make it an overt advert for your site.
