round nose bullets in 308
Ive been loading the hornady 100 gr. round nose bullets in my 243 with great success in accuracy and killing power on deer. I recently bought a savage model 10 in 308 and was wondering if any one has loaded this style bullet with good results in 308. thanks

I mistakenly bought a box of the Hornady 110gr rn and just loaded them up. They look a little funny and aren't seated very deep but they shoot just fine.

Speer used to make a 165 GR. RN in .308 that was perfect for the .308 Win. . It wasn't a big seller evidently because they stopped making it ! Now the round nose selection is 150 or 180 from most of the bullet Co. . Hornady has their 160 FTX but I don't know if it can handle .308 velocity .

Some of the guys I hunt with in Missouri use 180 grain RN bullets in 308. This seems to be a great deer harvester, especially at the 20-120 yard shots that we get in the woods. I personally haven't used them because in 308 a spire point in 150 or 165 will kill the deer just fine, but give me a little flatter trajectory just in case I get a shot across a field.

The only practical difference between RN and pointed
bullets of the same caliber and weight is the pointed bullet will be just a little bit longer, and will keep a slightly higher velocity (less drop) at extended range. But only a little bit, until the range gets out there.
Looking at Hornady, the .30 cal 150gr Spire Point vs 150gr Round nose, the difference (@2800fps muzzle velocity) is about 1 inch at 200yds and 5 inches at 300yds, with a 100yd zero. So, the round nose has about 1 inch more drop than the spire point at 200yds, etc. For a deer size animal, out to 200yds, no significant difference. Beyond that, you better know how your rifle shoots with the ammo you are using. The pointy one is dropping about 15 inches, the round nose, about 20. If you can hit with one, you can hit with the other, as long as you aim correctly for the one you are shooting.
