I've got a Garmin eTrex VistaC that is absolutely amazing, and it is 4 years old. They now have the VCX or something along those lines which is even better. Incredibly accurate and very user friendly.

make sure that you can one that is some what water resistant if you plan on hiking or hunting with it.
a buddy and I were hunting (me with my old magellan meridian and him with a brand new garmin) . well a down pour hit us and later in the day my old gps (that is water resistant to i think 5 or 10 feet) worked and his fancy new gps didn't ... I am interested to hear from the folks that have some of the newer GPS as to which ones work better for hiking/hunting and what features they like or don't like on each (and what features they want and the gps didn't have). Joe

Thanks guy!
I will definitely check into these models. And of course I do want something water-proof and reliable. I'm going on a big hunt in Northern Michigan in October and the area is quite large. I figure a GPS will sure come in handy as I am totally unfamiliar with the area! Weather can sure change quickly...

It depends on what you are using it for. I have a Garmin GPS Map76s that I have had for years. It is portable, reliable, it floats, has a compass, and you can load detailed maps from the provided and updatable Mapsource software. It is my trusted pack GPS.
I have have another Garmin Nuvi widescreen "driving type" GPS unit and a mid-priced TomTom. I prefer the Garmin for turn by turn directions and other customizable features. Many things like traffic, marine, and other subscription features add to the cost that may never be used. If you are staying on the road, the Garmin will even show seasonal roads in the UP, not just the major paved ones. Off road I can recommend the GPS Map 76 or similar. They still make it and now in color. Go to the Garmin site and compare the features.

I have both a Garmin eTrex Legend and 60CSX. The CSX has a Quad Helix antenna which gives much faster satellite connection, which is very handy in wooded areas. It's the one I use the majority of the time.

I have 2 Garmin's 1 is a Etrex Vista and the other is a 60 Csx. I love the 60, it is perfect for the woods and for driving too. You can get the basic roads from it and add a map package to get the rest.

You might want to hold off on Garmin for a spell:
http://hardware.slashdot.org/story/1...tnavs?from=rss I use a TomTom GO 730 and love it. Works with my phone, sends the commands through my car stereo via FM, has bluetooth and can play MP3s. Not bad for under $200.
