Lefty BP Rifle

Im now currently in the market for a left handed BP rifle i really would like a flint lock however i shoot lefty and cant shoot righty due to a terrible right eye so i was wondering how bad it would be for me to try shooting w/o getting burned or if they make left handed flint locks or something oldtimey in lefty

im not sure im not looking to go crazy give me an idea i mean ideally i just want something for hunting so i could get into BP hunting however i like the old style rifles but im just worried ill burn my eyebrows off with a righthanded one

i have seen the left handed deerstalkers in 50 cal i think its by lyman

I have 2 made now
One is a cap-lock half stock Hawken in 58 cal, and the other is a very nice Lancaster flintlock in 54 cal
The flinter is $2600, the Hawken is $1500
I can send pictures if you'd like.
I can also build about anything you'd like.
Prices got from about 9 hundred to about 6 thousand, --- so that leaves a LOT of room to customize.

well i will definately keep you in mind however i would like to see how much i get into the sport for now.. im really a big bow hunter and this is my first year gun hunting and im going to try blackpowder pistol and rifle if i can get my hands and wallet around one

New production left hand flintlock rifles are still being made but are hard to find. I recommend a Lyman Great Plains Rifle; if you can find one the price will be around $450. They're excellent rifles, well worth the price. If you get a new one it will require about 100 rounds to lap the barrel enough that it will group consistently, but after that it will give a lifetime of good shooting.

The Deerstalker is also a very good choice.

Some lefties shoot right hand flintlock from the left without injury. Takes patience and practice to get over flinchies.
Checking out muzzle loading publications and suppliers is sure to find you some lefty rifles for sale. Most are custom made so be prepared to pay accordingly.
OTOH, when the time comes to resell you won't have any trouble recouping your investment provided the gun has been well cared for.

The Lyman Great Plains rifle and Cabela's Traditional Hawken are both available for lefties. Both are good quality rifles made by Investarms in Italy.

From what you're tossing around I'd go with the Great Plains but make sure you can get real bp, flinters wont work with subs.

The Lymans shoot very good.
The PA Pellet rifle received several good reviews when Bass Pro was selling it. It's a reliable flintlock with some modern features that gives it a little more appeal than the Lyman.
Neither are designed to be long range tack drivers when firing patched round balls. However, the Traditions should perform very well if shooting bore size conicals or saboted bullets for hunting.

The Traditions wood stock is not as good as the Lyman. But IMO its longer barrel, lock and adjustable fiber optic sights are more desirable which should make up for any difference in round ball performance.

Just for information - I developed eye problems due to diabetes and my central vision in my right eye is not good. I'm right handed also. I still shoot my right handed rifles/fusil de chasse with no problems. It takes a little getting used to but it can be done. I still load like a right hander - just shoot it left handed. I had one of the little CVA "squirrel rifles" that was left handed that I picked up used at Friendship when I started having eye problems. Honestly, I didn't like it. It was a good little shooter and nothing wrong with the rifle - I just couldn't adjust to a left handed rifle. I sold it a year or so ago as it was just sitting around and not getting any use. About the same time I bought it, I also bought a H & A underhammer in 36 from Deer Creek (this is twnety some years ago). It turned out to be one of my favorite rifles - simple, well built and loads of fun to shoot. Good luck in your search - you'll find something that will fit the bill that you'll feel comfortable with.

i was just worried about the flintlock sparking in my face if i went with the old school one and shot lefty with a right handed gun

I really don't think you'd have a problem with that. I have a right handed Fusil de Chasse which has a good sized lock on it. It doesn't cause me any problems in regards to the sparking/flash when I shoot it left handed. I didn't have a problem with the flint rifles I had either. Unfortunately, everytime I made one, I ended up with someone wanting it so I'd sell it. I have one planned out for the making this next winter when I'm in AZ - it will be a right hander as well because I still have a numbrer of right hand locks to use up. If you can, try someone's right hander if you don't have one and see how it goes for you. Good luck!
