460 S&W Mag.

I have been trying to work up a load that will come close to the velocity obtained with factory Hornady 200 gr. SSTs.These loads are chronographing an amazing 2731 avg. f.p.s. out of my 15" Encore.I've been working with Barnes 200gr.XPB bullets and H110,Win.296 and N110. None of which will get inside 100 f.p.s. of the above stated velocity.I'm thinking they may be using a blended powder.Maybe it's leftover space shuttle fuel.

That's an amazing speed. I can't get anything quicker than low 2300s with recommended loads. Can I ask what loads of 296 you're using?

I don't think a phone call to Hornady (or an e-mail) would hurt your chances of approaching their performance. First key would be to find some 200 gr Hornady bullets before you call, though!

Yup, thats serious speed alright. The most I have been able to squeeze out of my XVR with the Barnes 200gr was about 2,350 with a max recomended pile of H110. And yes, Hornady does use a blended powder, so we probably won't reach factory velocities on our own. Also someone give me a shout when the SST is available as a component. Hopefully that will come soon.

With the long barrel on that Encore you might want to look at some of the faster rifle powders; RL7 and IMR 4198 come to mind. I'm clueless where you'd find data though. CB.

Madmax 1956 ,
I'm useing 48gr. of 296 with a Barnes 200gr. bullet.Alot of my high velocity is due to the 15" encore barrel and no cylinder gap as found in a revolver.
