Scout-Scope recommendations

I several milsurp rifles that have the the standard rear sites on them (like this):



I love them but as I get old-er, (mid-50's) it is getting harder and harder to see them. This is esp true with my Yugo 24/47, those rear sites are tiny as hell (the yugoslavs must had some great eye site!)

I know their are several companies (NCstar, S&K for example) but I've had zero experience and would like some recommendations. What I want must be:

* Non-permanent
* Easy to install (I'm not a gunsmith and don't play one on tv)
* Inexpensive (relativity) but not j-u-n-k
* Looks good (I WILL NOT put some hideous stuff on any of my milsurp's)

Or is there something else that may fit the bill (besides a scout-type scope?

The whole 'scout rifle' concept was one of Jeff Cooper more stupid ideas. No PBI scout would ever even think about using a scoped(with it in the wrong place) both action rifle. No PBI troopies ever gets to pick what rifle he uses either.
In any case, most of the 'no gunsmithing' mounts don't work well and drilling and tapping a milsurp of any kind significantly drops its value.
"...the Yugoslavs must..." Nothing to do with them. Mausers are German designs.

My eyes are getting older, too. My milsurps stay original and I shoot well at 100 yards with open sights. That's Minute of Jerry or whatever and what the rifles were designed for.

My scoped stuff would never be adopted for military service, mostly Ruger No. 1s and 22s.

I think part of the milsurp experience is to shoot them the way Granddad did.

I have not seen a mount for mounting an IER scope on a milsurp that looked very sturdy.

I am a fan of the Scout concept ..... but all of the mounts I've seen for Mausers and whatnot are pretty flimsy and most mount the scope way too high, such that the comb needs a cheekpad added .....

I have a leatherwood 2x7 which I like very much. Good clarity, positive clicks, repeatable, holds zero. I use it on my m1a. I also have a burris on my 35 rem marlin 336. I prefer the leatherwood.

Oh, I dunno ...... today's ACOG's are not all that different from Cooper's low power IER scopes- they just have an illuminated reticle and require batteries. The "Bindon Aiming Concept" was pretty much lifted from what Cooper wrote decades earlier ..... The size and weight of the M-4 are not much different from Cooper's Scout .... the only differences in concept are the caliber, number of rounds carried, and the idea that great lots of rounds downrange are prefferable to precision ...... which is fine for someone in with access to a reliable quartermaster branch that can get tons of ammo to the most remote places in the world in very little time ......

Regards "scouting" a Mauser, ....didn't B-Square make a mount that used the Mauser rear sight ears? But....much of the B-Square stuff I've seen lately is made in China.

That was usually the case with cooper.

That was the flimsiest and least stable of the Mauser scout style mounts that I have looked at ...... it's aluminum, and secured with 1 screw ..... which when you read reviews, often strips the aluminum threads ....

It also adds at least an inch to the sight height ......

+1 on the S&K scout mount. I have one on my 1937 k98 Mauser for about five years. In that time there has been zero movement. I went with a simple Simmons 4X fixed power pistol scope and regularly shoot it at 300 yards.
