Replace front sight on Rem 1911
New Remington 1911 shoots about 8 inches low at 25 yards, in two successive trips to range. On second trip, I started trying to elevate the front sight in the sight picture, and it seemed that I'd have to file that post all the way into the middle of the white dot to get the sight picture right.
Will I need to replace both sights, just the rear, or just the front to solve this? Thanks for advice |

Don't mean to be a smart-a**, but have you contacted Remington? It is a brand new gun under warranty, right?

.
Most likely Remington could do a fix if you sent in only the slide ($7 via a USPS Flat Rate Box) - I would ask their Service Dept. Mine shoots to the sights with commercial ammo - if you're using handloads, all bets are off. (IOW, you're on your own) If you're on your own, I would suggest installing a higher rear sight blade for starters. . |

You might have a barrel link which is too long. Check the timing.

Wouldn't the first round, at least, strike near point of aim?

I'd send that back to Remington, and let them fix their screw-up. If you're using standard ammo, off the shelf, then it should be close out of the box.

This is a known issue with the Remington M1911's. Just give them a call and ask for a shorter front sight, they will mail it to you.

Shortening a front sight sounds like a job for Mr. Dremel's invention.
Or just a file. A little at a time until it hits where you want. When it's right, measure the height of both the rear and front sight. If more sight picture is needed, then you will know what to order that will work on that particular gun. Hope that made sense.

Let someone else shoot it. See if they have the same issue.

All gun manufacturers repair departments not only have a large gunsmithing shop, but a firing range to check the returned guns functionality. Winchester, when it was still in CT. had a large indoor firing range. Remington, Marlin, and the others have the same.
As stated above, this has been a known problem, and what would be best is to send a note about where it shoots, maybe include a target along with the gun, and let Remington make it right. I take it that it is still under warranty? |
