There's a new Sharif in town,,,
Her last name is Sharif and she is my good and dear friend.
I hang out at a great restaurant bar in Stillwater, OK,,, That's the home of Oklahoma State University,,, Many of the servers there are students. I offer to take them shooting at my Rifle & Pistol Club,,, Several of them have gone out with me and had a great time,,, She is one who really took to it and enjoys repeated range outings. She graduated in the Spring with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering,,, So I thought I would get her an appropriate gift,,, Our beloved university mascot is Pistol Pete,,, I thought a western rig would do fine. I wish I was a wealthy man but I am not,,, But I do have some good skills working leather,,, I purchased a new 4.75" Heritage .22 revolver as her first gun,,, Then I made her a gunbelt, a Texas jock-strap holster, and a bullet pouch. I presented the gift to her yesterday,,, Just look at the smile on her face. I made the pattern for this Texas Jock Strap holster,, From a picture in the book Packing Iron. I opted for a cartridge pouch rather than cartridge loops on the belt,,, It saved me a lot of hours sewing loops and I think it's more practical for the range. Anyways she was thrilled with the revolver and the cowgirl rig,,, And I got the pleasure of watching her face light up as she opened the packages. It's shameless bragging I know,,, But I just had to share this fine occasion,,, It's not often I get the chance to do things like this. Aarond

Yee Haw!
MR. Graham, I am glad that yours was the first thread I opened this morning! What a great thing to have done for that young lady! You, Sir, are a true ambassador of the shooting sports! Miss Sarah will forever remember her time at OSU, and when she is shooting that Heratige revolver with her future children, I am sure she will tell them the stories about her old friend Mr. Graham. A perfect way to start my Wednesday, Thank You Aarond! P.S. That leather is something I am sure will last several lifetimes. I hope it gets passed down in Miss Sarah's family for the next 200 years. Very nice!

Hello Wyoredman,,,
Thanks for the kind words my friend,,,
I had forgotten that you are an OSU alumni. It's funny to me that you mentioned teaching her kids with that revolver,,, This is an excerpt from the card I made for her. "Someday when you are teaching your grand children how to shoot with this revolver, Tell them a funny story about the old coot you used to schlep Blue Moon beer to". After we get to the range with the Heritage Rough Rider,,, I'll teach her how to clean and oil the handgun. At the same time I'll show her how to clean and condition the leather,,, If she keeps it clean and occasionally applies a drop of oil,,, The leather should easily last for her grandkids. Aarond .

Hello BigJimP,,,
I'm chuckling here my friend,,,
I'll turn 62 this coming November the 17th,,, Which I might add is the infamous Sadie Hawkins Day. Yes, I was born on the day when Dogpatch women chase men,,, As a kid I took it as an omen for my future. Aarond .

I did test the revolver first,,,
I did test the revolver first,,,
I didn't want to take her to the range,,, And then find out the gun was bad out of the box. I put 50 rounds of Remington LRN through it,,, The gun shot to point of aim at 15 yards,,, Off of a plastic rest it grouped 1-1.5". It is an inexpensive gun which always gives one pause,,, But as a first handgun I think a single-action revolver is ideal. Aarond .

I don't EVER recall seeing an aarond thread or tales of his ventures that wasn't fantastic. Here we have another! Besides just the good bit of fun you have in these adventures of yours, aarond, you're doing a phenomenal job of spreading the shooting sports to a younger generation.
There's nothing but good in this one! Blue Moon all around. (love that stuff!)

You did a nice thing. Many younger people don't feel they have sufficient need for a membership at a range. You seem to make yours work for everyone.
Hope the Heritage shoots well. |

Nice leather work aarond. A kind thing to do for someone who is just starting out (not much left over after all the student loans). Your gift is now tagged with memorable story that I'm sure will be told to many down the line. That's the nice thing about our firearm heritage. It's more than just a gun. I have many wonderful stories in my gun safe.
Good for you aarond. Thanks for sharing. I love reading posts like this one.

Aaron - I do leatherwork - holsters, etc. as well so I know the effort that went in to that rig! You did a fantastic job on it! I also have a Heritage RR that I bought as a knock around gun and I love it - a good value for the money and a great "first gun" for someone getting started. I know the work that goes in to making a looped belt and for my 22s, I do the same thing. It's a lot easier to carry 'em in a pouch.
I'll bet she was tickled pink with all of it and it will be something she'll treasure the rest of her life. That's what it's all about . . . putting a smile on another person's face! Great job and thanks for sharing.
