I just made it out to the range and chrono'ed a couple of loads with AA 2220,2230,2230-C powder. I used two rifles, one a 20" 1x9 chrome lined bushmaster w/ A2 bird cage, the other a 16 1x9 chrome moly steel( not chrome or SS) J&T post ban upper. I also shot some Am eagle factory ammo. ____________________________20"______ 16" 55 fmj AM eagle___________3180______3026 50 HP AM eagle___________3200______3091 26g AA2230 55fmj__________3242______3250 22.0g AA2220 55fmj________2883______2815 22.4g AA2220 55fmj________2885______2822 22.8b AA2220 55fmj________2955______2900 25.0g AA2230-C 60 V-MAX___2956______2891 25.7g AA2230-C 55fmj______3038______3008 26.4g AA2230-C 55fmj______3094______3055 26.4g AA2230-C 55 NOS BT__3054______3023 26.4g AA2230-C 55 WIN PSP_3075______3052 All the above using once fired FED brass, OAL 2.245 except 55 PSP 2.235. Below is data using once fired LC 91 brass 22.8g AA2220______________2925______2876 The AA2230 load with 26g with 55 fmj was to hot for the carbine, flowed primers, brass looked ok out of the bushmaster but I'm going to back it off a bit ( to 3150 fps ) I've used the 26g load for years but this is a new keg of powder and the velocity is higher, and you know what they say, change any componet and back off and retest. These are an av. of 5 shots at 20 ft. The AA2220 had a lot of flash out of the 16" rifle. I'm going to try a little higher load of 2220 in the future. WIN small rifle primers were used throughout and all loads were given a slight crimp with a lee factory crimp die. I'll test group size at a later date with scopes on the rifles. |

Thanks for the data S-J. I'll be curious to see your tests when you do the group sizing.
A couple of questions - Where did you find the 2220? Is it now available anywhere online? What is 2230-C? Is it the Czech variety? Aren't you surprised to see the 16" bbl have a higher vel. than the 20"? How do you account for this? Also, both vel.'s are too high for the listed load as you suggested. Any ideas why? |

Both the AA2220 and AA2230-C are bulk powders that I bought from wideners. I think they are new surpluss powder. I paid $200 for 4 8lb kegs delivered for the 2220 and $239 for the 2230-C, the 2230-c is Accurate powder but is slightly slower than 2230. I was supprised to see the 16" barrel to shoot faster than the 20 with the 2230 load, why I don't know. This lb of powder (2230) with a 26 g load shoots 100 fps faster than I have chrono'ed before, why, maybe a different lot. As for all the vel being a little faster, I used federal American eagle brass for most of the loads, they weight 100 g each, most of my LC military brass is 94-96 g so the fed brass has less internal cap. This might be the reason my 2230 load is shooting hotter, I used mil brass last time.
I think that this data between the 20" chrome barrel and the 16" chrome moly barrel is decieving a little, I'm sure one is slicker than the other and if I had the same size barrel in the same config I;m sure one still would be a little faster. HTH ------------------ Southside_Johnny |

Thanks, I'll check Wideners for them.
I still wonder about the single 2230 load. If your hypothesis about one barrel being slicker than the other was true, then all the tests should show this effect. With a normal load like 26.0 gr. you shouldn't be able to get that vel. out of a 24" barrel, much less a 20" or 16". Frankly, I would be wary of that batch. Something just ain't right. |

If you had to pick between 2230C and the 2200, which do you like better in the .223? I have a jug of the 2230C but was thinking about getting some of the 2200. I can use the 2230C in 308 for my HK 91 but I am thinking of getting the 2200 specifically for loading .223.
Just like your overall opinion, Thanks NJW in AZ |

I just chrono'ed some more loads today, I'll post later. With the AA2220 my vel peaked about 3100 fps in a 20 chrome barrel, I was shooting for 3150. The AA2230-c I can reach higher FPS, and in a savage.223 26" gun my load goes somewhere around 3300 fps w/ the 2230-c. I need to order more powder and I will go with the AA2230-c, a little more money, but still a bargan at $75/ 8lbs. I have yet to try it in .308, I think it will have a hard time knocking off 4064.
