270 Win. vs 270 Wsm real world handload performance.

I know the 270 Win. is a legend and perhaps rightly so, depending on the person you talk to. I want to know if the 270 wsm is a noticeable upgrade in power at minimal gains in recoil. This could determine whether I keep the .300 Win. Mag. or go to a lighter kicking option with the same reach for medium sized big game. I would welcome any input from anyone with experience. The cartride has to reach far, be accurate, and may take on anything in north america eventually. I have the 300 already, as well as 30-06, and 25-06. I doubt that either 270 really outreaches the .25-06 when handloaded on both sides. However it may be the cats but for reach, power, and lack of recoil all in one. So far I'd lean toward the wsm. The 25-06 and 270 are almost twins with big game bullets, as far as I'm concerned. I'd like to hear what people think, based on hand loaded performance.

I am very confident in my .270 long action, and if the WSM performs to that level, even without surpassing it, it is a great caliber for what you said. 130 grain Nosler BT with 59.0 gr. of H-4831. The WSM claims to be flatter. I have shot one (never chronographed it though) and the recoil was almost identical to my long action.

I made a 410-yard shot on a Mulie with a .270 using a 130gr Hornady SST. The guide, looking away from his range-finding binoculars, exclaimed. "You GOT him!!" It can't get any better than that.

Must not be much to talk about

Thank you sir, I'm glad someone replied and I understand from what you've said, why you love this caliber. However if no one else has anything to say, then I must be correct in what I've always thought. That is that the 25-06 will outreach it and the 30-06 will outthump it so there isn't any need for the .270. Thank you for you're response though. I respect anyone's opinion. I was just looking to see if anyone could get me to consider a .270 but it doesn't look like I'll be switching anytime soon if this is all the support I can muster. I have always read that the .270 is great but I want to hear from other people.

If you have a 25-06 and a 30-06 you've pretty much got all the ground covered that a .270 would and more effectively. I have a .270 myself but I was looking for a rifle that would cover all bases from large varmint up to and including Elk because I couldn't afford to buy two rifles. It does that very effectively but personally I couldn't see buying a gun that won't complement your others.

I had a .270 (Rem 700 Classic) and loved it.
It shot well.
Long story, but I now have a .270WSM (Win 70).
After experimenting through quite a few load combinations, it now shoots awesome.
Look at the ballistics and compare to what you have.
See if it fits your needs.

Despite killing many elk with that old .270....I know that if I still had it, as well as my current .270WSM.....the old .270 would be the one that got left at home for an Elk hunt.

Thanks for answering, I wasn't really kicking at the .270, just trying to stir the pot. So far I feel the same as the last response.

Well I guess I got my answer. The 270 has no reason for being. Might as well forget about it. Stick with the real champ, 270 Wsm.
