Picked up 158gr JSP, Win 357mag cases, and now I need a load for my GP-100

I have a new GP-100 4" on the way and I need a good solid load to use with it.

Winchester 158gr JSP bullets
Winchester 357mag cases
Winchester small pistol primers (both stand and magnum)

I have on hand A2400, W231, W296, Universal, Unique, and Titegroup.

I am looking for a nice solid performing load around 1150-1250fps from my pistol.

I am leaning towards using Universal or titegroup, as they are pretty clean. Although, W231 has been pretty clean in the past as well.

These are primarily self defense PRACTICE loads I am going for.

Suggestions???

I would work with the Universal and 2400, W231 and Titegroup may have to much pressure at the 1250 fps end. I have a 4" Colt Trooper that loves AA#7 and Blue Dot, I do stay well below max with BD as it behaves erratically at cooler temps. AA#7 I load lighter as well but for accuracy reasons. I have been thinking of AA#9 when I run out of BD.

Sorry, I don't think Universal would be a good choice for the velocity you want, W-296 and 2400 would be your best bet.

I get right at 1200 fps with 2400 or 296, and 158gr jacketed bullets from my 4" GP-100. The 296 load is Winchester's listed max at 16.7gr with CCI350 primers. Couldn't find my notes on the 2400 load, but it was not over max either. Expect a visible fireball with either load.....even during the day.

I have used 15gr of 2400 for years and have had no complaints. Mine is a 4" Python.

I have been shooting 357 mag for close to 20 years now and of the powders you have listed , 296 has given me outstanding consistency and accuracy through a lot of guns - especially my Smith 686s , Ruger Blackhawks and a TC Single shot 357. Also works great in my 44 mag loads.

2400 mentioned by pdawg is an old standby that has been around for a lot of years. I used to use it a lot and it too can produce great results.

The bullet you have , the Win 158 JSP - I used Winchester's JHP version and a load of 15.2 of 296 with a mag primer and it was one of the most accurate loads I ever shot through a revolver.

Agree on 296 or H110 for the jacketed 158's. If you are looking for plinking and practice, get some lead 158 gr SWC's and run those with about 5 grains of Universal. In a 6" tube this is just under 1000 fps, and will be more comfortable to play with and will have about the same point of impact.

You mentioned Unique. 6.5 grs. of Unique under a 158 gr. jsp or jhp makes a nice plinking load that resembles the recoil from full power factory 125 gr. loads. Runs about ` 1050 fps. from 4 " bbls.
