S&W 28-2 new to me

Mod 28-2 Highway Patrolman
DOB ~1966

I scored this on one of my recent LGS rounds. It is in excellent condition, hardly fired, except for; the side plate middle screwhole, someone messed up the sideplate by the screw and lightly scraped the bluing with a screwdriver. I offered $500, $50 less than the asking price because of the cosmetic issue. LGS checked with owner and the owner ok’d $500. I touched up the mark with a blueing pen and its considerable less noticeable now.

It came with a blue box, not the correct box, no tools papers. Didn’t have original stocks and the ones on it were a bit grungy. I cleaned them up and gave them a new coat of finish and they turned out well.

I cleaned the bore and chamber and took it for a quick test drive and everything worked fine. Second trip with paper found it shoots very accurately. Only thing is I had to crank the rear sight to the far left to center hits on the target at 7 yards. I don’t know if I’ll worry about the sight alignment too much as it shoots very accurately. Only thing is that it is annoying to have to crank the rear sight all the way to the left.

Good old classic. I have one with a 4" barrel. Enjoy it.

I have both the 4" and the 6".

I bought the 6" in 1994 for $300 in almost new condition, no box or papers.

The 4" I bought a couple of years later, from a guy at a gun show who was getting rid of some of his collection... Never been fired, only the lightest drag line around the cylinder... $250.

Unfortunately he had tossed the box and paperwork a couple of weeks before.

Sigh.

I had one issued to me in '74 when I joined the Anchorage Police Dept. 4".

I retired in '94 and they gave me the gun. I've shot the heck out of it, pretty heavy loads. After all these years it still shoots.

I will admit I've gone to my 6 inch Model 27 for bowling pins. The 28 worked OK, but the extra 2 inch sight radius seems to help a bit.

Still for a good old heavy working gun, can't beat a Model 28.

Quoted from OW Wilson, "Police Administration".

The service revolver should be heavy, so it can be used as a club if need be
I think Mr Wilson had the Model 28 in mind when he wrote that, even though now days I don't think pistol whipping bandits is to PC.

I bought a M28 in 1979, second hand like new. I used it in my first shooting Jan 1980, shot a Rape Suspect at 80 yards when he was shooting at me. I still have it. It's an excellent gun.

I bought one used about 10 years ago with a 4" barrel. I really like the gun. Mine is also a 28-2 SN 183XXX. Anyone got an approximate DOM. Not important, just curious

Depends on the prefix. If the SN starts with "S", then it's 1958-59. If it starts with "N", then it's around 1973. 28-2s were produced from 1961 to 1981, so presumably it's approx. 1973.

The Model 28 is a classic .357 revolver and every revolver enthusiast should own one. I have a 6" and my wife has a 4", both very tight and accurate. They are very good revolvers.
