AR-15 first time buyer! BCM?
****EDITED to display indecision and waffling!****
My real question is: which will be the better rifle for a little under $1000? Colt 6920 MP with magpul furniture.. OR BCM BFH 16" Mid Length Upper Receiver Group w/ BCM KMR 13" Handguard.. And finish it with PSA lower parts. Will I get more value from a BCM upper or the Colt 6920 with magpul furniture? Thank you for your help! Any general AR15 advice is appreciated! Everything ar 15 is super plentiful so prices are low. I'd jump all over that deal.

Colt is very good--but if you're looking to use the lower as a base for other's uppers--I believe they have their own breakdown pin size so compatibility might be an issue.

I believe some colt lowers also used a different diameter trigger pin size, in order to prevent military FCG parts to be installed in civilian rifles. Id buy the colt and leave it alone. You can build a complete lower for about 150$ for later builds

Production of everything AR went into overdrive right after the gun scare. What we are seeing now is an overstock everywhere which is keeping prices low and inventory in stock

Older colt sp1's had different takedown pin sizes. Any new 6920 is going to be interchangeable with everything else.

Colt stopped using the larger takedown pin at least 10 years ago.

Nice to know on the pins!
I still can't figure how they are offering this gun with all the extras for the same price point as everyone else wants for a stock model.. Am I just being too paranoid? |

Make sure it is not a 6720 which is a light weight barrel and a couple hundred below a 6920. Nothing wrong with a 6720 it is just lighter and will not have the same profile as a standard m4.

Not the same price as everyone else.
I'm not even an AR junkie (only have one & it is basic) but the deals and low prices are dripping from every crevice of gundom. S&W M&P rifles for under $600? PSA offering complete parts kits minus stripped lower for under $400? For EBR's, it is absolutely a buyer's market. If you fancy yourself a buyer, this is a wonderful time for you! But take note - get something you absolutely WANT because you simply will not be able to recoup your expenditure if you later wish to sell it. (Unless the gun banners win the lottery, then all bets are off)

Should I wait then? For an after Christmas overstock deal?
A hundred or two saved would buy some nice ammo |

If even more savings is your goal...
Hit the used market. With these prices on scads of new rifles, the used market should be ripe with screaming deals. Want to save more? Then don't wait a month... Wait a YEAR!

If you're wanting to save money, I'd just pick up a PSA, or build one with PSA parts. I own two, and they're every bit as nice as the Colts I've shot and messed with.

Good price on the Magpul edition 6920 and the mags are pretty much a "freeby" I would go for it before it is one of those ---I wish I had--- situations.

BCM makes very good stuff.
I prefer mid gas over carbine gas as a rule. I would also rather have a standard profile barrel over a light weight barrel... Unless my goal was a rifle as light as possible. Even then, I'm not a big fan of the lighter barrels. I would choose a BCM upper and bolt with a standard barrel in mid length configuration. PSA makes a good lower. Lower parts kits are cheap, and even BCM has them at good prices. Just make sure you get a buffer tube/ receiver extension that is made from 7075, as there are some made from 6060 and it is not as strong... Simply getting one that is claimed mil spec is not enough, as they may only mean mil spec dimensions. A mil spec diameter will give you more options for aftermarket stocks. |

Thank you Marine6680!
Good catch, I copy and pasted the wrong thing, BCM BFH 16" Mid Length Upper Receiver Group w/ BCM KMR 13" Handguard. That is correct. Any chance of going wrong with this? I will watch out for the 7075, nice tip! |

Honestly, I'd go with a BCM upper and PSA lower. Fit and finish is as good or better than Colt's (insert angry mobs here), and the KMR handguard is pretty great in its modularity, function, and weight.
Mid length gas systems in a 16" barrel are great. Softer recoil impulse to an already minor recoiling platform, while keeping the same dwell time as a rifle length gas system in a 20" barrel. Carbine gas systems in a 16" barrel aren't bad, but they're not entirely necessary until you get down to 14.5" barrels. |

Both sound like fine rifles to me. I've had good experiences with BCM products, including uppers. Colt has a good reputation as well.
Which one do you fancy more? |

That upper looks good, can't go wrong with BCM.
