Help: Going to need a new barrel for my S&W 29
Does S&W offer 5" blue replacement .44 barrels?
If not, does anybody know who does? |

I doubt S&W has any Model 29 barrels left at all, much less a 5".
I would contact them to ask, you might get lucky, but a 5" is not likely. Unless you want a non-original type barrel, as example a round barrel, no one makes S&W factory-type barrels. |

What did I do to mine?
Take a look at the Ugly Squib Today thread, and you'll see exactly what I did to mine.
Thinking I may opt for a heavier barrel than the original Mountain Gun barrel, since I don't mind a couple ounces more carry weight and might prefer quicker follow-ups. Then again, I may just frame the sucker and put it on the wall... |

Do you know a good gunsmith?
Back in the early 80's I had a very good gun smith build me a gun. Took a 28 Smith, drilled out the cylinder to 44 special and placed a Douglas barrel on the gun. The thing will drive tacks. Sorry for the poor photos. The upper Smith is the custom 28 the lower is a 24. Last edited by Ozzieman; October 3, 2012 at 04:14 PM. |

Planning to send to S&W to get the cylinder and timing checked out
Barrel split all the way to the forcing cone, and the cylinder is currently bound. On the bright side, the fact that it's stuck in place makes identification of the bad ammo a no-brainer, as the empties and one live round are still stuck in the gun.
Both S&W and the ammo manufacturer had closed customer service until Monday for the holiday weekend, so I'll find out more on Monday. |

ammo
I had a similar problem with a Colt Elite in 10 m/m many years ago. Seemed one of the rounds was triple charged. I got a face full of powder burns...a good reason to wear eye protection.
Anyway, the manufacturer was PMC. My understanding was the ammo was not supposed to be sold but an unscrupulous dealer got their hands on some and sold it cheap. Colt made good on their excellent weapon and replaced it at no cost!

You didn't mention the split all the way to the forcing cone and the cylinder problem.
Its very likely that the frame has been damaged, in which case the gun is now a parts gun. S&W will have to examine the gun to determine if the frame is toast. As above, S&W is out of older model barrels. |
