Help with an old Winchester, please

I happened across an old Winchester model 1892 today. I can't seem to find much info online to properly date this gun.

The serial# is 3832xx, It has the proper markings on the barrel and the tang behind the hammer. The barrel is octagon shaped

I think the caliber is 25-20, on the left side of barrel just in front of the breach are the numbers 25-2, I think the 0 is just under the breach. Right behind the rear sight is also the number 20.

The finish is worn, not appearing to be redone. I think someone changed some parts on it trying to make it pretty as it has a chrome ? buttplate,lever, trigger, rear sight, forestock end and barrel band. Also the thin metal band on top of the slide is chrome. I would assume the chrome parts are after market.

Close up and focused pictures of the markings would be better than a picture of your tablecloth, pretty though it is.

The gun was made in 1907.

On the .25-20 Model 92, the barrel marking reads ".25-20 W.C.F.", with the "20" 3/4 inch from the receiver. If the receiver cuts off the "20", the barrel has most likely been set back, and maybe rechambered to something else. Measure the barrel length (muzzle to breech face with a cleaning rod) and see what length the barrel is, and also do a chamber cast.

The muzzle crown is definitely wrong, and someone has been messing with the barrel band and magazine tube. The "pretty" plated parts, needless to say, ruin the collector value unless the work can be undone. I hope that "happening on" that gun didn't cost too much money.

You have a Winchester Model 1892 rifle (as opposed to a carbine) chambered in 25-20, manufactured in 1907. It appears to be in very nice condition in spite of the magazine tube wear and the stock being re-oiled.

If you need any work done on it, call John Taylor at Taylor Machine in Puyallup. He works mainly on old Winchesters.

As Jim posted, the barrel has been shortened from the rear, aka "set back", along with the magazine tube, most likely due to some chamber issue (rust/gouging/etc).

You COULD go to the trouble of a chamber cast - but if a .25-20 will chamber and the bore looks OK/matches, I'd just enjoy it for what it is, an old shooter (like me

).

That was pretty much my plan! All my guns get shot occasionally. Now finding 25-20 ammo in this area might be tricky!
