Winchester 1892 .44 mag
I have a Winchester 1892 in 44 mag. Can I use 44 special ammo in this rifle? It isn't listed on the barrel where it is on the barrel of my sons Henry 44 mag.

Most likely, yes - there might be feeding issues from the shorter cartridge, though, and definitely if sharp-shouldered bullets are cycled.
Since Winchester never made a Model 1892 in .44 Mag, do you have one of the new Japanese/Miroku made "Winchesters", or an older Winchester Model 1892 (.25-20, .32-20, .38-40, .44-40) that's been converted to .44 Mag (usually a 1970's rebarrel job on a .38-40 or .44-40) ? . |

You'll find that 44 Special ammo shoots very quiet with almost zero recoil.

If you go to try it, try feeding just a single round the first time, not a full magazine.
My 1892's are both current production Miroku-made and chambered in .357mag. They will not feed .38spl worth a dang (and Winchester says that's not unexpected and why they stamp the receivers as .357mag only). I've tried several .38spl loads with different weight bullets and none of them feed reliably (and if you try shooting rapid fire, they'll bind up the action in a royal CF that will have me cursing for awhile trying to clear the jammed round), so I just stick with .357mag loads now. |

Give Steve Young (aka Nate Kiowa Jones) www.stevesgunz.com a call/email. As one of the top 92 specialists, he may have some experience with this, including any fix (to better feed, not guarantee) he might've come up with if the shorties are a problem. I know he's been able to make specials feed more reliably/ consistently--that were problematic examples at least on some .357 and probably .44 Mag Win clones.
