What's suppossed to go into the buttstock storage area on these rifles?

Normally in military rifles a cleaning kit gos in the buttstock.

That's what I thought too. But the hole is only 6 1/2" deep and 1" around. What did they use a 5 piece rod? The way I measure it the barrel is around 27" long (roughly measured with a 1' ruler)
