Old Army Help

I finally got to shoot the Old Army for the first time this weekend. What a hoot! I am hooked. I was very surprised at the accuracy. I shot lead balls I cast from a Lee mold that throws a .457 ball. The OA shot a little less than 1” at 15 yards using 28 grains of the Holy Black.

I got a few questions.

I only have a few pounds of soft lead and a lot of wheel weight. Can I cast balls out of wheel weights and use them or are they too hard?

I have a Lyman 452664 that I use for my 45 Colt Vaquero. Can I use it in the OA?

If I use a Wonder Wad can I lube the bullet with my regular stuff or do I need to use SPG?

What is a good bullet or conical to use with this gun
Thanks

I will advise ya not to use non pure lead or hardcast clip on wheel weights in any C&B or Flintlock guns at all. Especially revolvers as the ball won't swedge into the chamber of the cylinder and shave a couple thou off lead rings. Then when fired the ball would not bump up enough from the chamber to the riflin' of the barrel...either way they don't work well. Now I have read that the stick on wheel weight are pure enough, I don't know that for sure though.

I'm not familiar with the Lyman 452664 but the model number implies .452 caliber. Ruger recommends a .454 conical and a .457 round ball. Accuracy could suffer with the .452 used as a conical AND you might see bullet creep by using the .452.

What is the "regular stuff" you speak of? A lubricated Wonder Wad will keep BP fouling soft in most instances but maybe you are using a dry WW. I can't tell from your post if you are using a WW as a gas seal then putting lube over the bullet.

FWIW.
