In theory, this has been debunked multiple times on TFL...
... so if it is not true, why is it now being reported by Forbes and The Denver Post?

The Denver Post story (which is actually from the Associated Press) does debunk the conspiracy-theory aspect of this.
The Forbes piece is an op-ed... by someone who apparently wants to fan the flames. Meh. I don't think this needs more discussion; the story has been debunked, as you point out.
