anyway to fix broken keyway in smith cylinder?

i have a smith 27-2 3.5 inch barrel revolver.

the key that keeps the extractor star from turning in the

cylinder is broken.

is there anyway to fix this without a new cylinder?

I don't know of any feasible way and wouldn't even listen to suggestions involving welding, crazy glue, oil of bats' wings, or any other magic solution.

Contact S&W and have them replace the cylinder.

P.S. Someone probably tried to tighten the extractor rod without putting empty cases in the chambers to keep the extractor from turning, or thought the S&W extractor star unscrewed like the Colt.

So when you try to eject the shells, the star turns more or less freely?

I didn't think it would be possible to strip that out without twisting off the ejector rod.

You could have it welded up, then reground or EDM'ed back out since this is a non-critical part, but this is a really iffy practice. I'd just order a new one from a Smith parts house. This is very a rare break. I'd also like to know what happened here?

i traded a friend of mine an 870 for it, he had got it and never

shot it just stuck it in the safe.

to answer the question that was asked, yes the extractor star turns
out of place when you eject the shells.
there is a little scar on the ejector rod, i believe someone had taken it
apart without putting any shells in the cylinder and broke the key off

when i took it apart i did not find any pieces in the assembly so
i assume when they broke it, all they did was put it back together
and sell it to my buddy.

i know he didn't lie to me as we have been friends for nearly 10 yrs
and offered to take it back.

the cylinder is 130.00 bucks from numrich.
i guess i might go that way.

one of my shooting buddy's here told me he had seen only one
other broke keyway in 40yrs of shooting.

and suggested we could just solder the extractor star down on the
pins and polish the cylinder bores.

i think he's nuts but i really don't have the extra bucks to fix the
thing.

if anone body runs across one give me a heads up please.

Guy's Smith and Wesson has a lifetime warrantee it's a no brainer send it home. Dan

and they quoted me between 200-250.00 for the repair.

we are talking about a 40yr old gun, they can't be held responsible

for this and i wouldn't expect them to.
