I live in Michigan but go to Green Bay, Wi alot to see the Grandkids. I buy most of my stuff at a local shop there. Even before the shortage they always sold alot of reloading item. Powder, Primers, etc. They get a shipement in about every two weeks, and if your there when it comes in or have them hold something for you they always have it. But it goes really quick. My son in law just called and said they had a bunch of powder come in if he wanted me to pick some up. He works like four blocks from there. I told him no thanks and trying not to over buy. I feel goodfor aleast a year so thats all I need. I guess the point I am getting too is the powder companys seem to be restocking the shops that are moving it faster. Even Shceels sooner or later gets what you need. The prices where not bad between 19.00 and 23.00 a pound depending on what you were getting. The only primers they carry down that way are winchesters, for some reason thats all folks that way use. Not saying thats bad there probably just as good or better than all of them. I just started using CCI so I always stuck to them. I dont think they are any better but just dont feel like reworking my loads. I think this supply thing will be over soon all you folks are on to the panic buying so that will help, and keep those dam prices down. Just my thoughts

The Gunshow in Medford Or. had Primers, all you wanted.

Last weekend, 79.00 per thousand,

The Gunshow in Reno had primers 2 weeks ago also don't remember the prices.

The gunshow in the Cow Creek casino 5-2-09-5-3-09 will also have them (next weekend)

For reloaders here in Oregon I see a "bottoming out" of the supply vs. price.

as the price increases we will have steady stocks again.

It's the people willing to pay 80.00 a tjhousand that are the root cause of the shortage because the price gougers selling them for those prices at the gun shows and on gun broker are wiping out the normal stocks so they can resell at a profit.

I would not pay more than 3.50 a sleeve because that just will reenforce the high prices. When we stop paying it the prices will drop and the supplies will return to normal. So far I have been getting a couple of hundred here and a thousand there and have not payed more than 3.50 a sleeve.

Backorder is your friend.

Houndawg is 100% correct. We pay it, and they will sell it. I know the supplys will come back, but at what price? I even had someone ask me if that would be a good idea, and I told him straight out hell no. You are going to be hurting yourself and fellow reloaders from having a clean, fun, hobby or whatever you would like to feel about it. If the high prices are not paid they got to come down or they wont sell period. I can see paying alittle more at a ma and pa shop that has a hard time making it, but I am talking a small amount more. I am sure not everyone aggress with this but just my two cents!

Yeah don't buy that garbage @ 80 bucks/ thousand! These guys buying in bulk and selling for a profit are a disgrace to reloaders everywhere. This just proves how many reloading addicts are out there .. who pays 80 bucks for something that normally sells for 30 !!?:barf:

I love a good honest gun shop, just picked up 1000 WMRP for $25 and 1000 CCI 209 $35.

Talked to the guy a bit, he had mentioned that Federal was filling a government contract till mid 2010. Mentioned that if your shooting .223 you are out of luck. Something about government contracts and he hadn't scene SRP in about a half a year.

Here's a simple method to "fix" the primer shortage.

If we can't buy primers turn the heat around to those who make money in the gun industry to place direct pressure on the manufacturers of Primers.

1). No primers?

2). Don't buy any reloading componets also.(powder, brass, dies, etc.)

3). Don't buy any firearms, pistols or rifles or shotguns.

within 1 month a ship the size of Texas will be anchored off the U.S. with containers full of primers from overseas. (China, Russia)

The Gun industry is too occupied counting their billions in profits since November to care about us and our problems.

Another noob to loading, but

I have been shooting since I was able to hold a gun, but for the first time in my life, I am wanting to get into loading due to the availability and the ridiculous price of factory ammo. I have a carry permity and my family are competitive shooters who do reloads. They are the ones who are trying to get me into it, but I cannot find any primers.

I think it is the manufacturers. I think it is true that they got locked into a large metals contracts and are busy gearing up for Afganistan. Maybe "hording" has a little to do with it, but it is not the main problem. They could catch up if they really wanted to.

There are lot's of folks fighting for our rights to bear arms, but I hope someone if fighting to the materials needed to enjoy it.

A gun without anything to shoot out of it is a pretty worthless gun.

Well I must say that a couple weeks ago I went ahead and bought 1,000 for $45... ONLY because I had NONE. I just think it is BS that places are charging that much for 1,000 Primers, BUT I and everyone else KNOWS that people are going to keep paying whatever people are asking for them. Yes it is good advice for people to tell everyone and preach NOT to pay the HIGH inflated prices, BUT people are going to pay them. It sucks that they are, but there is nothing you can do about it when something HAS to have them. I am pi**ed off at the Local Shops for the Price gouging, but what can you do about it? Nothing.

The new reality

If you are running low on primers... it is time to quit whining about it and find a place that allows back-ordering primers such as Cabelas and get your order in now. If you are lucky they will show up in two or three months. Most places don't actually charge your card until the merchandise ships.

I ordered 5,000 primers in February when I couldn't find any locally; they all showed up within a few weeks. When I realized that things were going from bad to worse I ordered 12,000 more in the beginning of March. All but two thousand from that order have now showed up. When I ran out of small rifle primers near the end of March I ordered 8,000 more primers of different varieties to even out the varieties I try to keep in reserve. They are supposedly going to be showing up some time in June.

I kept thinking primers would show up locally and I could save on shipping and hazmat fees. But by ordering three different times it cost me at least an extra $100. I have single stage presses, a turret press, and a progressive press. I can easily go through a couple thousand primers in a day.

The range I go to is mostly empty during the week. The ammo situation is even worse for those who don't reload. I ordered a couple of boxes of 30 carbine ammo in March... it is now back-ordered into July.

This situation is self-perpetuating... the longer it takes to get them the more you have to order ahead. I would much prefer to buy them as I go.

I don't like the new pricing any more than the next guy, and haven't had to pay them yet because I stocked up over the last few years. I would NEVER pay the scalping $80-$100 on gunbroker.
Please keep in mind that with the enormous increase in demand and cost of factory-loaded ammunition, paying a couple cents more per primer still makes reloads a VERY viable alternative to searching for and spending a ton on a box of name-brand stuff (if you can even find it).
Although your price per shot is up a couple of cents, (primers in the $30-45 range/1000) it's still a good way to go and a lot of fun and satisfaction is to be had working up loads for your guns.

To bad with the price it was high, but I know what you mean when you need them it was not real bad. I would make sure, and tell him that in the future your going to be looking at other places to buy, and I am sure you will. Also remind him of the old word of mouth, and tell him to get on this forum. He probably wont, and if he did it would not matter anyways. I was lucky on finding what I needed for the correct price, I dont mind paying alittle more from the small guy, but I do mean a little or I wont buy it. What bothers me is you have a nice clean/sport/hobby or whatever you chose to call it, and people want to **** it up by making money from it. No doubt they do not reload. Sorry about the use of words.

I am just cutting back on the centerfire and re discovering the joy of rimfire shooting. Yesterday went up to the range and burned through a couple of hundred .22's.

Between the Buckmark and a little Marlin 60 with a 40 dollar scope I entertained myself for 2 hours for less than 20 dollars. Next purchase will be a cap and ball pistol I think. I did take the 1911 and shoot about 35 or 40 rounds through it but I still have a good supply of large pistol primers.

I had placed 5k small pistol on backorder on 4/1 and just got a call today saying they were in and shipping at the original price. I think they ran around $31.65 per k with the hazmat included.

Did you notice that Graf's is no longer taking back orders on Primers? That part of their site is completely barron, except percussion and musket caps.

Maybe things are starting to turn around after all. I just got an e-mail from Cabalas saying my Rem 7 1/2 Small BR primers have shipped. I backordered them less then a month ago. (I paid $30.99 per K) After the hazmat fee and shipping they cost me about $43 per K . I was almost out of primers though. I was down to my last 500!

Yes I told TSA that they were in my luggage . They said no problem.
I got a raft of manure from a TSA guy for having 200 empty cases of .45 ACP a while ago, a real arrogant power mad guy. In the end he let me take them, I figure he wouldn't have if the next guy in line tried to get on with a press in his bag.

Plenty of Remington ETronix primers.

I see flint locks advertised more and more. And that muzzleloader is looking more and more seductive all the time.

Last box I paid 37$ at a local gun shop. Another place is selling for 1000 in the $30's but out of most everything. Good luck if you have a preference in brand and match version.

I noticed that "back in stock" dates are different for the different manufacturers. But I haven't seen RWS back into the game. I was told by some suppliers that RWS only distributes to US when prices are good.
