The originals used to hold 15 rounds of .44 rimfire. What do the .38 models hold????

I don't think that you can get a Henry in .38, unless you mean the Big Boy from Henry in New Jersey. That one holds 10 rounds.

I only know about the Uberti "Henry" rifles and they're in .44-40 or .45 Colt.

The original 1860 Henry fired a .44cal Henry round which developed into the 44-40 that we have today. It is correct that Uberti only chambers their reproduction of the 1860 Henry in 44-40 or 45 Colt. Tube magazine holds 13, per their literature but must shooters only load 12. The Henry Repeating Arms does not produce anything like the orginal 1860 Henry but they do produce somewhat of a look alike with the Winchester Model 1866, sometimes called the "Yellowboy". HPR calls this copy Big Boy when offered in larger calibers. They do offer it in .357/38spl and I have no idea how many rounds it will hold. All of Henry Repeating Arms lever action rifles are images of various Winchesters, but the company has no connection with Winchester other than borrowing from their history.

The .44 Henry was rimfire and a straight case, so it is considerably different from the later .44-40. There was no other caliber in the Henry.

FWIW, the Volcanic was redesigned by Oliver Winchester's shop foreman, Benjamin Tyler Henry and the new rifle became quite popular in part because it happened to be available at the start of the Civil War. Later, Henry was honored by having his initial, "H", stamped on every round of Winchester rimfire ammo.

Henry makes some good guns especially the .22's but the Big Boys are nothing like anything ever used. Henry plays off the Henry name but they are not in any way affiliated with the 1860 Henry which was made by New Haven Arms Co. later to be known as Winchester.

My desire is to find a rifle that would be 'period correct' for the first few years after the civil war with the highest capacity possible, so .30-30 is out, I'm looking in any of the pistol calibers.

Suggestions????

Uberti Yellowboy a good shooter???

I noticed that .45 LC and .38 Spl have the same capacity, due to a similar cartridge length. Since these have a brass receiver, would you want to use only BP cartridges????

I'm leaning towards the .38 myself.

Thoughts????

They're supposed to handle factory smokeless loads but I wouldn't go any hotter.

My Henry Big Boy 45 Colt is a ragged hole maker. It's a joy to shoot and I've had zero problems.

Just remember that the Henry Big Boy is not period correct. However, the Uberti '66 Yellow Boy is. My Uberti Model 1873 44-40 with a 30" barrel holds 15 rounds.

I love mine with the 30" barrel, don't shoot CAS with it but it just as accurate with either factory Ultramax "Cowboy" smokeless loads or Swiss black powder loads from Buffalo Arms: http://www.buffaloarms.com/44_40_Bla....aspx?CAT=4443

Unlike .45LC with blow back, there is very little clean up in the breach and action needed when shooting bottle necked black powder .44-40 cartridges, mainly just the barrel.

Loooooooooove my Uberti 1866 yellowboy!! 45 Colt, solid brass frame with deep blued barrels and buttplate and gorgeous wood. Handles any and all 45 Colt loads...

Henry makes the Big Boy in 357/38 they can be had for under $750 and they are Made in the USA. If I wanted a 357/38 lever action it would be either a Henry or Marlin. I have a older 1894 in 44 mag I bought when they first came out 20+ years ago shoots flawlessly.
