Which 9mm/.40 for mom and dad?

Hello all,
My dad has a Ruger Security Six that he bought new in early 72'. It's mint. 4" Barrel, Carbon Blue, adjustable target sights. Over the last 6 months, he's been asking what I thought it's worth for trade in. First, lemme say that I've told him that if he sells that pistol to a store, I'll kill him. His only option is to sell it to me, because he's my dad, and he loves me. I'm pretty sure that at some level he's decided he'd like to get a semi-auto, and I've offered to ease the burden of finding ones he might like. ;-) I've offered him $350 for the Ruger. With that being said, I've looked through Bud's web pages in search of pistols in the $300-$400 range, which look like they may fit his hand, and mom's as well. (Bud's is 10 minutes from me, and IMO, their prices are so good it's a waste of time to shop elsewhere)

Until they get some range time on any of those semi auto's picking one would be a mistake.

Don't know what people will like until they try it. End of Story.

Hopefully they can try some out first. Buying in the blind can be a mistake.

That being said, I like the sigma 9VE. The ergonomics are awesome.

Great gun for home defense.

The trigger thingie is way over blown on the internet.

I'd buy shotgun if it was only for home defense. Nothin says lovin like 12 guage 00 buckshot.

That's just what the man said; without wanting to start a caliber debate, I'd agree that the 9mm is plenty/enough to get one's point across while staying within budget on an auto.... or not. Thus.. the OP.

those sigmas are trash. i owned one for 3 days. don't waste your time.

i'm not a huge fan of rugers, but as far as i know they are reliable.

i assume you are talking about the sigpro series if you think you can get one in that price range. normally i push people away from those as well, but from the three you suggested, that's still what i would go with.

my opinion - look for a cz. if you can get a 75b in that price range, do it. if not, go with the p-07.

CZ75 would be my choice as well if you were looking for a pistol.

My LGS charges $200 more for the cz75's then Buds.

You are allowed to spend more on our dad than his gun Ruger is worth. I'm sure he's spent more on you over the years.

Buy him a Beretta, Sig, Glock, CZ, etc. Get him a quality, reliable, accurate gun that fits his hand. Maybe feel him out by taking him to a store or gun show. You only get one dad, and the fact that he enjoys guns is icing on the cake.

I wish that were the case. Dad's kind of an odd duck; the only reason the three guns he owns aren't little piles of rust is that I at least once a year, drag them out of hiding and clean them. His Mossberg rifle needed a major intervention back in the summer.

It makes one wonder why he would even care what's in the sock drawer, revolver or auto. He might not care much about shooting, but I care enough that I don't want to see him trade off a classic like the six for anything else. To that end, it is going to be a budget based purchase (if he decides to do anything at all).

My dad was just like yours. Get him something in stainless, or a Glock. Both are pretty rust resistant.

I've shot the sigma a lot and the SD ($386 at buds) and I'd go with that all day. It has a DRASTICALLY improved trigger, front night sight, great reliability (I've never seen one with a hiccup) and a melonite finish. That finish is awesome and all of my smith guns with melonite show zero signs of wear.

The SD's a great gun for the money. My friend, who is new to semi's as well, asked me what he should get for under $350 (military discount) and after my convincing, he picked it up and loves it.

I haven't shot one yet, but I like the narrowness of the SR9s, I've held one and it felt right for me too. Also 9mm would be better for mom.

Nothing like 18 shot's for spray and pray.

TBS, I'm looking at getting one myself. If I was worried about more power, I'd use one of my .357mags, or my 44mags.

I think Buds carries the Sig Pro in 9mm (and night sights but could be wrong). Sub $400 as I recall.

That would be my choice, I own one, love it. Fantastic gun let alone for the price, it stacks up equally with the HK P30 (have shot that one) as well as the P220 (45 and also shot). Trigger is maybe better than the HK and close to the P220.

Your father should shoot first and ask questions later. Nothing worse than spending the money on something which turns out to be a "drawer queen." If he doesn't have the opportunity to shoot his top picks first, he should at least check their ergonomics and function, try out their triggers, watch them being disassembled. A little information before purchase will made a big difference.

Nothing wrong with wanting a new gun. But your Dad has an excellent self defense gun for your mother and him. I prefer S&W and my wife's house gun is a 2 1/2 in 686 loaded with 38+P LSWCHPs. Simple, reliable and deadly.

Unless you mom and dad are gun people why get complicated. That ruger will work just fine. If anything I'd get another revolver that used the same speed loaders.

Your dad really has the perfect home defense gun for him and your mom. Loaded with 38s it's a great gun. A semi auto is going to be harder for her to use in a stress situation if she is not a regular shooter who can become familiar with an auto. My guess is she isn't going to shoot enough to be proficient and the auto is going to be less useful to mom than a club later in life. Having said that, talk your dad into just keeping the one he has and getting another one he wants. It's not like an old car that wears out and takes a lot of space and he can take his classic out whenever he wants and go back to it if the auto is not to his liking. I would suggest a CZ 75 or browning hi power if he must have a 9mm. Glocks are simple to operate but they have a fat ass that makes the grip akward for some people and a weird trigger pull that I don't like. I have a friend that loves glocks but I like his sig 226 much better because the grip is more comfortable and the trigger feels better. You might also steer your dad towards a good classic 1911

Get one with the flat mainspring and short trigger. Your mom will be happy

The Springfield XD is a very good 9/.40 and very simple to use for non gun cranks.

I would agree on the Sigma 9. If your dad's been a revolver guy forever, then the Sigma will feel like butter. I agree with above that the trigger thing is overblown. My brother has a 40, I've shot it plenty and i like it.... and a bonus is the stainless.....

Pretty simple, easy take down, mild shooter, accurate.
