age 5 or 6, with a single shot .22 bolt gun where YOU control all the ammo and preach safety until they are sick of you, then do it some more

I got bored with the video. Every kid is different. But I think they are mature enough in about the 5th grade personally to understand the safety issues and take a strong interest in shooting. However, if a kid expresses a strong interest younger, I would not be against starting them in the 1st or 2nd grade. But at that age, BB guns work just fine as far as I'm concerned.

Gun safety
everyone started at a different age but if Your a parent and you have a gun in the house you should at least teach them about gun safety soon as they're able to walk and talk, don't let them touch the gun but teach them what it is.

My son shot my 22 for the first time (with assistance) when he was about 18 months old. Of course, he thought the little things flying out the side were where all the fun was but he wants to go with me every time now.
There is no too young. It's all on you as the parent. Keep them safe, be responsible, no exceptions EVER. Teach them more and let them have more responsibility as they get older and show that they are prepared.

I am 45 and and have four kids. My oldest son is 24 and has quite a collection of firearms in his home. My 19-year old son is a MP in the MARINES and shoots expert in rifles and pistols. My 18-year old daughter carries a handgun for self-defense while in nursing school. My youngest daughter is 5 and already owns a pink Crickett .22 rifle.
They all have one thing in common regarding firearms... They all know gun safety and have a respect for all firearms. I have never made firearms a mysterious and forbidden fruit that kids have to wonder about. All of my kids began shooting at a very young age so that they could learn the basics of handling a gun and safety. This is my youngest shooting her Cricket on her 5th birthday:

Like most other subjects, I've found that when they've already started asking questions, you're behind in the game. -7-
