Jframe owb holster

Who makes a quality owb smith J frame revolver holster? Not looking for any kind of retention system on this holster. This is for a smith model 36 no dash. I have a kahr p380 for pocket carry as my back up. Should be a good set up once finished.

I came across a used Winthrop holster for mine, and it holds my S&W 640 perfectly. It's an open bottom, but covers the entire barrel on any gun shorter than 3".

I have had excellent luck with El Paso Saddlery products. IMO, if you don't want a thumb break, the tension screw is a good feature.

You didn't list a desired budget. Since you're not looking for a retention strap, I'll just mention the holsters where the revolver sits a bit low will generally have better stability and retention. The Kramer sits high, but will be very secure.

Kramer Belt Scabbard (rides a bit high)
Milt Sparks PMK (rides a bit low, one of my favorites)
Ryan Grizzle Countryboy or High Country

I know you said "no retention" . . .

But, I carry my Smith Model 36 Snub OWB in a Binchi Model 75. It's the best holster I've tried (and I tried plenty) and I love it. It holds tight to the body - I carry on the right side at about 4 o'clock. It is a thumb break holster but the thumb break works very well on drawing the pistol and still gives me the knowledge that it is going to stay in the holster regardless of bending, working around the shop, yard, etc. I took a chance on it and bought it off of flabbay - I think I gave about $30 for it a couple of years ago. I switched the stock grips out for a set of Pachmyer (sp?) grips - I believe they are combat grips?. Anyway, under shirt tail, sweat shirt, etc. it conceals well and doesn't print on my body. YMMV

I also have a Model 36 with a 3" barrel. While I don't usually like to have a holster where the barrel extends below the bottom - the same holster works well for carrying that when I'm woods walking, etc.

I have always liked Bobby Mac's for j-frames. They're a bit pricey, but old school and top quality. My uncle gave me one that he used in the 70s' and I still carry it:

Three letters, PMK. Wait your seven months and own the finest J frame holster made. Look what they sell for on Ebay, Gunbroker, etc., usually 120% of what you'll pay for one from Sparks. There is a reason for that, and a reason why Sparks limits how many you can order. Lots of decent gunleather out there, EPS, Simply Rugged, Kramer, Null, etc, but having owned all of those and others, my choice in leather, if they make the style I need, is Sparks.

That's a screamin' deal. If I was in the market I'd grab it. Some will whine about the exposed trigger but that's a non-issue with a revolver.

I like the El Paso #88 Street Combat holster, rides high, no thumb break or strap, lined, forward cant, fits close to body, stiff enough that reholstering is easy. Fits my 642 well and works well with Colt 2" D frame also.
