I picked up a new R1 Enhanced yesterday and did the unthinkable. I sat down a read the manual! And on Page 17 (where it was telling me how to shoot my new pistole), I found this oh so helpful photo:

BTW, haven't got it to the range yet but I'm favorably impressed with the fit and finish. The barrel locks up very tightly, the SS bushing is so tight right now you can't move it without a bushing wrench. Tried several different magazines in it (WC, McC, even one from a Sig 1911) and all fit perfectly. Nice oomph on the mag ejection - positive release.

Tested the trigger with my Lyman gauge and it averaged 4 lbs, 0.3 oz. for five successive pulls. The lightest was 3 lbs, 12 oz and the heaviest 4 lbs, 6 oz. The first pull was exactly 4 lbs. The manual says it should be between 3.5 and 5 lbs.

Wouldn't fit in my [ancient] Blade Tech. Had to force it in and then couldn't draw without excessive force even with the tension screws backed all the way off. Turns out the front sight dovetail base protrudes slightly beyond the rounding on the slide top and was digging into the plastic at the front of the sight channel. I tried it in the PHLster I got for my SIG 1911 with the rail and fit like a glove.

Left palm there there is still grip showing and angled.

How is that on the manual for 2012?

Got it to the range this PM - 250 rounds, all ball but about 25 LRN in the mix. Flawless and accurate. Fast, slow, close, far. Out of the box it is almost as good as my Novak custom Commander.

I even tried the Remington manual recommended hold. Not so accurate, vertical stringing... imagine that.

Buckeye guys, more power to you if you can manage a full house .45 auto pistol with that hold. My hat's off to you!

That grip is how I was taught back some,,,wow,,,30 years ago. My instructor was the armorer & hand to hand instructor for the East Cleveland Police Dept.
He took me through the whole grip, sight picture, trigger squeeze drill using my 6" S&W Mod 19.
Spent, maybe, a total of 15 min on the whole thing w/me. Probably less.
I went home and did some dry firing that night. A few days later we had to shoot for score. (It was part of a private police training school & we had to qualify).
We shot a 50 round course w/a B27 target - so many from 7 yards, so many from 15 yards, so many from 25 yards, so many from yada yada weak hand - I really don't recall the exact routine.
I do recall though that all 50 rounds went dead center into the X - with quite a bit of black still left.

When I made the transition from revolver to semi auto, I simply went with what I knew & felt comfortable with.

I learned my shooting techniques courtesy of Uncle Sugar, but in the same era. And with a 1911A1. We did some one-hand, bulls eye style (hand in the pocket) shooting, but mostly it was a two-hand hold. The instructors emphasized getting as close to the bore axis as possible with the grip - and no crossed thumbs!

I didn't really have much use for revolvers until about 20 years ago. I tried my semi-auto hold there (beautiful 6-inch stainless Python - still have it). Scorched the ever-loving bejesus out of my support hand fingers. In psychology we call that one-trial learning; I modified my grip with my index finger tucked well below the trigger guard. It still feels awkward to me with a lot of gun weight waving around way up high.

But still, cup-and-saucer? That's just so..., so, well Hollywood.

Glad to hear you like the R1 ... I'm back to thinking about that one again (maybe this years xmas gift). I was moving towards the Ruger but the new R1's are looking pretty nice and the price and availability are better.

The fiance wants a 1911 now... Was looking at the TRP non-railed Armory kote version... But the R1 enhanced seems like a lot of gun for the money. Still weighing options though. Need to handle a Range officer and a couple others.

The Ruger was nice, but I liked the trigger on the R1 more.

Apparantly everyone has become grip snobs recently. I agree it seems a bit outdated, but I wouldnt venture far from saying it's not a suffeceint grip especially for someone who may be new to guns. Not trying to play devil's advocate, but the guns can certainly still be shot this way.....

I was a SQL database administrator and a senior systems engineer (their title, not mine...I never considered myself an engineer in any way shape or form,,,,I didn't drive a train or build bridges).

I'm retired now and have changed my career path to something more to my liking - general contracting...

Over 20 years in the IT/computer/network field was enough. I got out just as I was on the verge of hating it.

I'll bet we could make a monster-thread if we wanted to dissect and pick on new gun owner's manuals. Things like the proper use of the big, gangly cable lock, the good old "never EVER use handloaded ammunition" and many more greatest hits.

I enjoy looking through owner's manuals also, but I've never read one where I would take every single item as law.

I use them to lock the gate on my fence. They work pretty well for that. Problem is I only need 1 and a spare or 2 ... not sure what to do with the rest of them???
