Thanks all for all the great insight. Fun to think about... Its not just for me... Its kind of one of them "Dare you to shoot it twice" guns too. lol... I would like to get it under control (Bruising is optional) and show off, then see the buddies try and shoot it...

Thanks to the ginormous muzzle brake I think the 50 has less kick than a 12ga. (The pressure wave will blow your hat off your head though). A buddy of mine has a 700ADL, light stock, skinny barrel, in 300RUM. That thing is a beast to shoot.

get yourself a ruger no1 in 45-70, a 500gr bullet at 2000fps...it doesnt get much bigger then that.

Nice 45-110, or 45-120...

Prob with those are the guns are usually fairly large and heavy in their own right.

The .416 Rigby is actually a great, more versatile than most realize, caliber rifle for big game hunting in North America. 'course the .338 Lapua is a necked-down version so that cartridge-du-jour is the one to get my friend.

Browning BLR in 450 Marlin. Equivalent to nice hot 45-70 loads, light weight and a box magazine for quick series.

460WBY should do. It can be reloaded. 500 gn bullet should get your attention. If you really want abuse, cut back behind the brake and recrown. I have a 460 (they all come with brake) and it isn't something most would enjoy. Bench rest is not its' forte.

A Steyr M95 (8X56r) is a lightweight rifle that shoots a big cartridge!
The thing is they can be picked up fairly cheaply, (around $150) the ammo is a bit expensive but it can be found. In case you don't want to spend a ton of money but just want to get your shoulder pounded on. Check out

But, seriously, I'm siding with those who have recommended getting the 45-70, if for no other reason than the cost and availability of the ammunition as compared to some other suggestions.

why not 45/70? very easy to reload for and very versatile. if you want something to knock your shoulder back into place from the previous shot knocking it out then 300 WBY is quite stiff. more expensive than win mag but quite strong.

I've always heard that the M95 carbines kick like mules but the one I just got is a pussycat. my handloads replicate hornady factory velocities which are a bit under what the surplus has but still not enough to make a guy think that he's shooting a howitzer.

When Dad was a young man, he ran beagles. For some reason, he was out with a borrowed 10 ga with external hammers. The dogs got on a rabbit, so he cocked both and got ready. Here came the rabbit, and you guessed it, both hammers fell when he fired. Don't know what became of the rabbit, but it knocked Dad on his butt. So I guess you could find an old 10 ga. double with worn sears and give that a try. I will note that once was enough for the old man. I'm not sure what he said, but it sure wasn't, "Wow, I wanna try that again!"

As I get older I find hitting a mini ram at 200 yards with the 22 oddly more satisfying.
