Glock 29?

Okay so I was looking at some handcannon options for CCW and right now its a toss up between a Glock 29 (10mm with a 3.75" barrel), and a model 310 Night Guard. I guess I could always just get a .357 snub nose or Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan. Basically, can 10mm be useful out of a subcompact barrel length? 357 and 44 are fine at slower velocities with a lot of engery and mass, 10mm (at least from what I understand) was designed to be a flatter shooter than the .45 but still have more knock down power than a .38 spl or 9mm Parabellum.

My experience with the G29 has been good when it comes to shooting at paper targets. I put 20rds through it & the owner said he has put about 100rds through it without any problems. I was accurate (for myself) at 10 yards & as someone who thinks the 9mm is plenty powerful enough for sd situation the 10mm will do the job. It's hard to find a more reliable semi-auto than a Glock.

I have a Glock Model 29. I would also like to own
a S&W 310, but I think they are over priced. The
Glock is easy to shoot. You can also get a conversion
barrel and shoot 40 S&W out of it.

I would consider the 40S&W option. From what i am gathering you want more than a 9mm and the 40 seems to be the choice over the 10mm and the sig.357.

The forty has some serious penetration and stopping power.

And here is some ballistic testing that may help in your decision, covers all the handguns, with ballistic gel video, charts with ft lbs of for and penetration scales with various ammo http://www.brassfetcher.com/ .

Good hunting!

Cant go wrong with the G29

Actually, the Glock 29 and 29 SF can accomodate four different caliber drop in barrels: 10mm, 9x25 Dillon, 357 Mag and 40 S&W. Unless you handload, you might find most store bought 10mm rounds are not much more powerful than the 40 S&W. I did invest in some Elmer Keith style semi-wadcutter ammo and have to admit my 29 SF is very accurate.

10mm stopping power x number of rounds fit in one magazine with the small frame and all the aftermarket parts options has made my Glock one of my favorite guns!

Short answer...

Yes.
If you plan to shoot factory made JHP & regular ammunition in 10mm, then a standard Glock 29 or 29SF pistol will be fine.
A S&W wheel gun is okay for exotic or 10mm loads that may not function in a semi auto pistol but most defense rounds will work okay in a robust, well oiled Glock 29 10mm.

I have one. I am also considering selling it while the market is hot, because it's just a curiosity for me. I have a G29 and G30, BTW.

Standard factory 10mm loads are not much hotter than 40s.

It holds 10 rounds, same as the 45 ACP G30 and is virtually the same in every dimension if you extend the magazine floorplate with Pierce grip extensions.

The G30 has a nicer recoil and doesn't batter your hand. Both guns are similarly accurate and reliable. 45 is easier to find and a very high energy +P loads are available that meet or surpass 10mm.

You CAN put hard cast high pressure loads into the G29, but with its short barrel--why would you want to? The recoil turns from manageable to brutal.

Also, 10mm is VERY LOUD compared to 45 ACP.

If you are interested in direct comparisons... the G29 and G30 are in a class of their own. They are listed as "subcompact" along with the G26 and G27, but are closer in size to the G19/G23. If you were to get a compact-ish 40 as an alternative, get a G23. If you want something more reasonable, get the G30/G30SF/G30S. The S seems like a gimmick to me, since the fatness in the G30 is the frame, not just the slide.

Nothing wrong with the 10mm, but if it were me I would steer clear of the 10mm altogether. All ammo is hard to find right now, and what 10mm you do find is going to be PRICEY. For something similar sized, I would pick the .45 ACP Glock 30 or Glock 23 .40 any day of the week over the 10mm.

As for the G30, bigger bullet than 10mm you can still pack it with fairly warm ammo. I handload and have no issues getting a 230gr at 950 fps from my Gen4 Glock 30. Big heavy bullets have great momentum and it will work fantastic. If a big 230gr don't stop the threat, neither will a 10mm. You also have the option of using .45 Super ammo too, while uncommon it is out there and is essentially a higher pressure .45 ACP. I can throw 250gr JHP/hardcast over 1150 fps out of mine (G21).

As for the G23, it's slimmer, lighter weight, holds more cartridges than the G29 and shoots the exact same size bullet. No problems loading 200gr JHP's over 1050 fps or 180gr over 1150 fps out of it. Even if you don't handload, a .40 is not slouch on deer sized game and there are warmer .40 options out there, as a warm .40 isn't much slower than a warm 10mm. Same thing applies here, if you can't stop it with a .40, you're not going to stop it with a 10mm.

The 10mm is a good cartridge, but it's not what internet legend makes it out to be.

i picked up a g29 for a woodsgun and am overall happy with it. First thing i bought for it was a stormlake barrel, its a an inch longer than stock and is supposed to fully support the cartridge so you can shoot hotter loads safely. When you shoot hot stuff you definitely feel the difference, its not much fun but its good piece of mind if i was depending on it to stop a black bear or something similar.

If you have larger hands the 10mm 29 would do. But it is a handful to shoot one handed rapid fire.

Keep in mind you can overpower your gun!

And that is why I don't pack a Colt Defender .45. With Cor-Bon .45s I have to hang on hard if I try to fire fast, one handed, and accuracy goes out the window.

So if I used the Glock 29 I might use the lower loads or such as DPX.

Just make sure you can actually shoot it fast or you are just kidding yourself.
