Cabela's .58 Hawken Carbine?

This little sweet pea is sitting on a rack at the LGS. I see cabelas no longer sells it. Anyone know anything about one? I think it probably has 1:48 twist. But its short and very pointable which is what stood out the most. Its really light also. Of course the gun shop didn't have any literature on it. But its clean as a whistle and priced really well.

From what I've read, it is an Investarm and is very comparable to the Lyman Plains Rifle (not great plains) And the neat thing about them, is that 15/16 GM barrels will let it be a .40, .45, .50, .54, if you want a different caliber later. And I have seen a couple of guys that say TC barrels will fit it with very minor fitting also.

Interesting! It only has one wedge in it and I think the barrel is 21-22" long.

MMP also makes .58 sabots that fit .451 - .452 bullets.

I think the .58 is going to be one inch across the flats, not 15/16.

I had one for a while and can't remember why I sold it and got the rifle version with a 28" barrel. I think the carbine has a 22 1/2" bbl. It may be that I was shooting .58 minies in it instead of the PRB. They have flimsy sights. The barrels have pretty deep rifling with a bore diameter larger than my .58 Zouave. The minies that fit the zouave slide tright out of my "St. Louis Hawken" (Investarms). The lock is nice with double set triggers. I'm pretty sure they do have 15/16" (across the flats) barrels rather than 1". They have a recoil pad installed. Original mfg sugg retail of $240 but $159 from McGee Industries about 10 years ago (out of the BP business last time I checked).

they want 249 for it. I see the new cabelas hawkens (in 50 and 54) are 399 to 499.

That price is not too bad. It is hard to find short barreled 58s. I also have a Buffalo Hunter (carbine version of the Zouave) and an Enfield Musketoon Besides the other two mentioned above. I've been looking for a TC Big Boar but have settled for a plethora of alternate 58s. They are all great brush guns and great for handling around vehicles unlike the longer Zouave and very long Civil War muskets. They are like having fishing poles in the rig. With the very short barrel you sacrifice sight radius and a little velocity so you might consider using FFFg and a PRB and it'll put anything down your hit. A dot of Day Glo hunter orange on the front sight really helps in the low light conditions we have here in Western Oregon in the winter.

hmm, I didn't buy it because I didn't think it would do well with patched round ball. Dog gone it! I think I'll drive back down there and get it.

After seeing it the .58 bug bit me, so I said well lets see whats out there. And there isn't many .58 Hawkens (made by anyone) on GB. There is alot of Zouave's and a few 1861's but thats about it. I didn't realize that the .58 is that hard to find.

I am going back, they pulled it from the rack and holding it for me. I already have a .54 GPR. That carbine sure will be easier to wield around a deer stand for sure. We don't shoot that far around here anyway.
