single shot pistol
I am looking at a Comanche .410/.45 single shot break action with 10" barrel. Any thoughts good, bad, or ugly?

Commanche
The gun does not have a reputation for accuracy in the .45 Colt mode. The .410 is supposed to pattern fairly well.

Rough !!
A freind of mine recently bought one and it is rough, although the price seemed right. He had not shot it as a .45LC as he did not have any ammo and thought it wold be a hand cannon. I assured him that he could handle it. He's a good guy and I gave him a box. ....

Comanche 45/410
I've owned 3 of them in the last 5 years, gave 1 to my boss, 1 to son, kept 1.
THEY ARE NOT EQUAL TO A CONTENDER, NO WHERE CLOSE But, you can buy 3 or 4 of them for Contender price It is a 'hoot' to shoot You will get 'mobbed' at a range because everyone wants to know what it is 410 shells are not cheap, I bought a reloader (Brother has a Judge) Perfect boat/snake gun Shoot skeet at a pistol range (outdoor) Get the brushed/satin/nickle, whatever they call it finish Ruger SB ruger grips can be modified to fit Last edited by DannyAbear; December 31, 2012 at 08:41 PM. |

It is a fun gun.
I had a Comanchee for years. Mostly shot it as a 410. Not it's no where near TC quality, but it's no where near the price either. I killed many squirrels with mine. The 45C . . . not so accurate after ten yards or so.

I am tempted even though I have a TC frame. I can buy the whole gun for $50 less than I can buy a used TC barrel. Then I have to add sights/optics.
I also think this pistol would make a good product made at a higher quality level. A lot of states, mine included, have hunting regulations favorable to a handgun. $75 more in workmanship and this might be a decent back-up/entry hunting gun. |

Another vote for the Contender, I have 2, one in stainless and one blued and they have taken more deer than any other gun that I own. Owning the vast range of barrels can become an addiction.

The Super Commanches do have a rather small trigger guard, it will bruise your trigger finger. The reason I said get the SS looking version is because there are several sharp edges on them that you can blend/smooth with a dremmel tool and not worry about the finish. It is some kind of cheap ss like cast material throughout

Here is another option,,,
Rossi Matched Pair,,,
I finally found someone who owns one of these,,, The advantage to me is that you also get a .22 LR barrel. We tried shooting some clays with it,,, Neither of us had a whole lot of success at that. But the .22 barrel was surprisingly accurate,,, We were hitting clay pigeons on the berm at 50 yards. Just an option for your consideration. Aarond .

Damm, I didn't know about the Rossi. Im gonna have to order 1 of those. Just think, a chamber reamer in 22 mag, .223, or 22-250 and you could finish what Rossi started

45 and 410 have exceptionally low pressure. 223 and 22-250 would almost certainly be out. 22 mag might work, although i think they offer such a variant.

Just thinking aloud here about that Rossi. It looks like the same action used in their single shot rifle. If it's the same difference and you could buy just the rifle barrel it would be pretty easy to have those barrels cut down to 14".
As far as the Comanche, it's fun to play with and I bought mine because it was cheaper than buying just a Contender barrel. But that trigger made me sell it off pretty quick and pay the coin for a Contender barrel. Maybe it was just mine but the trigger pull was brutal.

Rossi won't sell a "pistol" receiver for these. I tried with the wizard.
All but the wizard have barrels that must be fitted at factory. They don't want to deal with selling "pistols" from their single shot line it seems. |
