lube ?

I was looking through the junk drawers for some long lost keys and came across an old tube of powdered graphite I got for cub scouts about 10 years back. I know petroleum products get gummy in black powder pistols, ect. would the graphite work or would it make a harder to clean mess?

In blackpowder you need a lube that will soften fouling. And will be removed by water. If you use petroleum products as lube then cleaning with mineral sprits or similar solvents. So we use vegitable and animal products to lube patches and pistols. The products left behind can be removed with water and Dawn detergent. One blackpowder gun writer use's windex w/vinager.
Some use only Crisco on patches, some use there own mix of snake oil, but all stay away from petroleum products in black powder shooting.

The graphite is a dry powder and has no softening properties for the fouling left behind after firing. Might work for one or two shots but the buildup inside the bore would be too great.

The reason modern black powder and subs are so black is because they are coated with graphite. Thus, at least some of the stuff you are trying to prevent with your lube is the build up of the graphite (and a bunch of other gunky stuff.)

Graphite has its place, but not in black powder guns.

Use nothing but vegetable products or water soluble lubes. I use nothing but WonderLube and Ballistol.

Well, the ops name is Hillbille....so...... that's 50/50 for you!

And I will use more bee secretions than crisco sometimes (mostly for bp cartridge loads), but rarely the other way around. After I butcher a goat, I boil up some tallow to use instead of (or with) crisco as well. Makes the lube taste better too. How redneck is that?

The graphite doesn't belong in the junk drawer. It does have a useful purpose.

I use it on the threads of my dies, but not on the insides. It doesn't work as a release agent for resizing. I use it on the slide rails of my semi-autos, but not on the chambers. I use it on the follower of my magazines and on the inside of the mag well.

It is a great friction reliever, if you can get it to adhere. There are lubes which are easier to use and not so messy, but it does have its place.
